Slow in playing a media the 1st time
I am running WMP9 in windows 98SE. When I open a media file the 1st time, it takes as long as 2-3 mins to open. The file could be played without problem. After I close the file and open the same media file or another, they would be opened instantly. I tried adjusting hardware accelaration in WMP9 but problem persists.
I was running WMP 7.1 and windows 98 then. I did not have this problem. Media could be opened instantly. |

Well it sounds like it is WMP9 that is taking a long time to open, not the particular media file. You could check this out by starting MP first, without specifying a file for it to play. And see how long it takes to start. And then click on the same files that take a long time to open, and see if they still do. I think this sort of thing can affect lots of different programs, not just multimedia, so there might be better answers at a Windows 98 group, especially better than this group which has no gurus reading regularly now. I use win98FE and the other day, it took a very long time for the OS to start, and even after it did, it couldn't finish starting all the startup programs, and froze. Yet it didn't give problem ever before, at least for several hundred starts, and it hasn't given the problem again. I think it is hard to solve these things. Slow in playing a media the 1st time
Thanks meirman.
I usually open MP by clicking icon. MP pops up instantly. Then I use File-open in MP to open the file. It takes long time to open the file. Does it show that MP could open promptly or I misunderstand. It is very true that it affects other programs. I have exactly the same problem with Real player v10 on my PC. I also have Winamp 5.3 on my PC. However Winamp can open the files instantly. All the media files I play are on my own PC harddisk. During the long time opening, WMP says opening. Real player says connecting? I tried to reinstall WIN 98SE (without formatting HDD). After that when I open WMP 9, it prompts me to insert Win 98SE CD for some files e.g. ksclockf.ax, stream.sys, etc, which are not found on the CD. I check that it is due to my original is a OEM Win 98. I just skip all those files. Any ways other than formatting C: and reinstall everything again? Slow in playing a media the 1st time
Got lucky and have the problem fixed. Seems it is due to the files that I skip when launching WMP the 1st time.
1. Follow following page to copy files to precopy folder http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=192394 2. Reinstall windows on top. 3. After that launch WMP 9 the 1st time, still a file dmusic.sys not found. Downloaded it from web. 4. WMP9 as well as real player problem fixed. Now they function normally. I would not have known that one. But I'll read the url above, and save this post of yours in case I need it. "andy_mcchung" wrote: Thanks meirman. I usually open MP by clicking icon.
