Default 1720-SMART HARD DRIVE detects imminent failure.

My son is tying to fix his Mother in laws computer and he
asked me about the following error message: Error #1
before boot - 1720-SMART HARD DRIVE detects imminent
failure. Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent
failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and
replace this hard disk. Attribute Failed: #05

Does anyone know if he can fix this easily, or will he
lose information and have to redo the harddrive, if it
can be saved at all. Also he has a second error message
that reads: Error #2 while on dialup service provider -
c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe.system will shut down in 60
seconds. I don't think it may have anything to do with
the first problem and may just be a software fix.

The first message is notification that the drive is failing. If his MIL
wants to keep the PC, she needs to invest in a new hard drive. He can
install and configure it and then use the software that should come with the
drive to transfer the data that needs to be saved. I would suggest a clean
installation of W98 on the new hard drive as there are indications
(lsass.exe) that there is a virus on the current system

It's just what it says it is -- a warning that the hard
drive is about to fail, and you should back everything
up IMMEDIATELY or expect to lose it. I think #5 means
you've used up your reallocation table.

It's easy -- buy a new hard drive.
