1720-SMART HARD DRIVE detects imminent failure.
My son is tying to fix his Mother in laws computer and he
asked me about the following error message: Error #1 before boot - 1720-SMART HARD DRIVE detects imminent failure. Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk. Attribute Failed: #05 Does anyone know if he can fix this easily, or will he lose information and have to redo the harddrive, if it can be saved at all. Also he has a second error message that reads: Error #2 while on dialup service provider - c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe.system will shut down in 60 seconds. I don't think it may have anything to do with the first problem and may just be a software fix. |

1720-SMART HARD DRIVE detects imminent failure.
The first message is notification that the drive is failing. If his MIL
wants to keep the PC, she needs to invest in a new hard drive. He can install and configure it and then use the software that should come with the drive to transfer the data that needs to be saved. I would suggest a clean installation of W98 on the new hard drive as there are indications (lsass.exe) that there is a virus on the current system -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "webcynic" wrote in message ... Attribute Failed: #05 It's just what it says it is -- a warning that the hard drive is about to fail, and you should back everything up IMMEDIATELY or expect to lose it. I think #5 means you've used up your reallocation table. Does anyone know if he can fix this easily, or will he lose information and have to redo the harddrive, if it can be saved at all. It's easy -- buy a new hard drive. Also he has a second error message that reads: Error #2 while on dialup service provider - c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe.system will shut down in 60 seconds.
