Default Sounds don't play

For some odd reason, my computer's sound just.... died.
The driver for the sound card is installed and updated,
the speakers are turned on and plugged in properly, and
the Volume controls have mysteriously stopped working. In
fact, they won't even run. I've been through the
troubleshoot that related to this problem, but nothing
worked. Any suggestions?
