I don't know what you mean by "with out seeing what you are doing", but to
change your monitor resolution just open the Control Panel, click on
Display, then click on Settings. After that, select whatever resolution you
desire, but select one that your monitor can handle.

Try setting it in Safe mode(tap the F8 key during bootup).

WTF is this? I am new to Windows 98 (a second computer on a little
wireless home network) & normally use Win XP.. That is the weirdest
thing I have ever heard.

Andy, press "start". Choose "Control panel". Choose "display" (I
think), In there, with one of the selections you'll see a moveable
sliding button. If you move it, it will tell you what display you are
selecting. Then "apply" after you get 640 x 480.

But why can't you run 800 x 600 ? That is at the low end of easy
Internet settings to see web pages & other stuff without having to
move a sliding button everywhere to see everything.

OP can't use your instructions, or any other standard instructions because
OP can't *see* anything, capiche?

Unfortunately, it appears that OP also has a dual-monitor adapter, and
probably also has manufacturer's display management tools installed, which
makes guessing at the precise set of keystrokes a shot in the dark. For
instance, on my XP with Radeon 8500 dual-monitor adapter and ATI management,
Hugh's keystrokes are meaningless.

Safe Mode suggestion was probably best. I'd even go so far as to switch to
Standard VGA adapter in Safe Mode, uninstall the support software, then
restart and finally reinstall the proper drivers, etc.

Sorry for my useless response. I did not realize the true situation until
Gary spelled it out.

Instructions for working "with out seeing what you are doing".

Perhaps because you don't understand the issue.

One bit of advice. If a regular poster posts advice which seems
"off the wall", go back and study the original problem
one more time before you criticize the solution.

While there is always a chance that the posted solution could be wrong,
the likelihood is that you are wrong, especially if you don't know the OS,
and the respondent does, and has probably seen this problem before.

Which I have, and replied to before, and resolved. Take care.

Default guess he can follow the in fustrated

Yes. you are correct. I did not understand the issue. I know now
that he cannot see a darn thing and needs to know exact keystrokes to
do what he needs to do.

OK, Andy. In case you missed the post to boot into safe mode, I'll
repeat it.

Just press F-8 a couple of times a second as Win 98 is loading. You
should get a DOS looking screen early in the boot process. Your mouse
will not work. Press the number of "safe mode" (#3 I think) or use
your up/down arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight "safe mode".
Then press enter. Your computer will now boot into safe mode. Safe
mode bypasses your configs you set. It will boot to 640 x 480. So
now you should be OK. But you need to change your display permanently
to 640 x 480 now for the next time you boot (it will boot back into
normal mode unless you do the F-8 thing again). So while you are in
safe mode & before you reboot, start\control panel\display -
somewhere in there is a sliding bar/button thingy. If you move it, it
will say what mode. It should jump to 640 x 480 when you move it to
the right place. Then "apply" then "OK". (I think there is apply in
Win 98 - if not, just "OK". Then reboot, & hopefully it will load up
normally in 640 x 480. Hopefully you have the correct driver
installed. Hopefully to all. new to Win 98. second computer on a
little home network.
