Wireless Broadband - Opening Ports?
Hi, I'm new to wireless broadband (only had it for a
week), but I've noticed that certain downloading programs and other software will not work now or will not be able to make proper use of my high-speed. I'm not sure exactly what they installed, but I think that I do not have a router. I have a EUM (WaveRider EUM3400 I think it is) and a home antenna. Also, I'm running ZoneAlarm firewall software on Windows ME. How can I open ports to get these programs to work again? I'm very new to all of this, and any help would be appreciated. Or if ports isn't the problem, what is? |

I can find a waverider site with wireless products, but that site did not have an "EUM3400" listed. Okay, just who is your HSI provider, and how do you connect to the Internet? Cable? ADSL? Some other version of DSL? Satellite? Who provided the EUM3400? And why haven't you checked with their documentation, or their web site? You haven't supplied sufficient information to be able to find a hint of a clue. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

My ISP is Gamewood, a local service provider here. I think
that AbleTelecom installed it, but I wasn't here at the time of installation. And my mistake, it's EUM3004, not 3400. I don't really know anything about wireless broadband or what to look for, sorry. Thanks, Shannon -----Original Message----- In article , Shannon says... Your ISP uses a hub and a central transmitter to link wireless modems to a wired "Point Of Presence" (POP) for Internet access. No, it does not look like there is a router in that modem. Any port issues will be either with Zone Alarm, or with your provider. If you are running Windows XP, disable Zone Alarm, and enable the "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF; pre-SP2), or the "Windows Firewall (post SP2). Try your applications that way. The reason for that test is that ZA provides outbound application level control, and ICF/WF does not. You need a firewall for Internet connection, and ICF/WF is adequate protection against external threats. If your applications start working, you will know that your problem is a Zone Alarm issue. If you aren't using Windows XP, you will want to change all Zone Alarm application blocks (red check mark) to question marks; and see if ZA asks permission for the applications. If neither of those approaches helps, you will need to find a site to run a port probe against your computer, and analyze the results of the probe. It could well be an issue with your provider, but you will have to run some tests to make that determination. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
