Is it possible to intall 98 on an Intel 945 chipset motherboard?
I support some applications that run on Win98 and I want to get a new
computer. However, Intel has apparently abandoned supporting Win98 on its new chipsets. Has anyone installed 98 on an Intel 945 motherboard? Are there problems. I would eventually dual boot with XP Thanks Pete |

I would eventually dual boot with XP Although I have not personally installed W98SE yet on a 945 chipset, (I use the 865's) ..but being interested I quickly looked on their webpage: http://support.intel.com/support/chi.../CS-020683.htm ..and I can see if you click the Intel 945 Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility link and toggle in your 98 OS - then Yes since it does give you a reference and a download for W98 and since specifically the main driver you absolutely need to run W98 are the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility to be installed, and so then your answer appears to be Yes it is supported using the v6.3.0.1007 on 12/16/2004 The webpage for it says it does, and it's release notes says it does, however at the same time going forward it officially says it validates it only on 2K/XP... Peter, to follow on what Rick said, be careful. Notice His last statement! I found Intel's web site said certain software supported
Win95 and a certain chipset ... but couldn't get IAA to load no matter what! Personal experience Vic ___ "Rick Chauvin" wrote in message ... We were not talking about IAA (intel application accelerator), but also realize IAA was designed out of 9x quite a few MB's ago with the 845 chipsets and will not install after that (I personally wouldn't install it before that anyway!) ..but I was only talking about the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility which contains what's needed for W98SE to be able to intergrate with the new MB's chipsets, etc... You should be able to but tweaking may be called for depending on the
chip, memory installed, etc. If the system has 700MB's of RAM or more installed following line MUST be added to the [vcache] section of windows\system.ini file but never more. MaxFileCache=512000 If you go over 1GB of RAM and still receive errors add the following line to the [386enh] section of the System.ini file: MaxPhysPage=40000 This limits the amount of physical RAM that Windows can access to 1GB. If the errors go away with this setting remove the memory over 1GB as it will not be used with this setting. Also, see these MS articles for more reference: Windows 95 Can Access Up to Two GB of RAM: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q181/5/94.asp Error Message: Insufficient Memory to Initialize Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;184447 "Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q253/9/12.ASP Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304943 Windows Protection Error in NDIS with a CPU That Is Faster Than 2.1 GHz http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312108 Error Message: VMM32.VXD Is Required to Run Windows... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194679 -- Brian A. Much thanks to all who replied.
I note however, the although the Intel support link does lead to v6.3.0.1007, when you ask for the 945 chipset, when you read the support text file, you do not find 945 listed. The last listed chip set shown as supported is the 925. So I suspect it is a bad link. I was really nice a few years ago, when Intel had their own Usenet motherboard support groups. You learned lost of good stuff when monitoring that group. Again thans for all the help Pete On Sun, 5 Mar 2006 10:26:00 -0500, "Vic" wrote: Peter, to follow on what Rick said, be careful.
