Default Problem with Windows Update - Error 08x0072efd

Help!!! I had to reinstall windows on a machine that was attacked by a
virus. After 5 days working on it, I am finally getting close. I am able to
connect to the internet, but when I attempt to do a Windows Update, I get a
message "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot dosplay the
requested page...". Checking the Windows Update.log file, I found the above
error. Research shows that this is a problem with NIS, but I am not running
any firewall on this PC. Please help me! Obviously since I had to reinstall
Windows ME, I assume that any previous updates are no longer installed.

As a further comment, I can access the Internet via IE, but can no longer
access the mail server via Outlook Express.
