Default Windows will not start

For some reason windows will not load although intil today it did so
with no problem. It seems to load & then freezes at the desktop. I can
boot from the cd and when starting using cd support can get to the
command prompt.

Is there a utility on the WinME Cd that I can use from the command
prompt to find out what the problem is please? Alternatively can I
reinstall Windows without formatting the hard drive as I don't want to
lose my data.

Can you boot to Safe Mode OK?
If so , then try a System Restore back to the last date the computer worked
properly

sorry for late reply; I have only just been able to log onto a friend's
pc to access this ng. No I cannot start in Safe Mode. When I try this
I get the following message :- Rundll32 has caused an error in
Kernall32.dll. Rundll32 will now close.

However it doesn't close & the only way to get out is by using the reset
button. I cannot use the pc at all at the moment

OK - then try a System Restore from a Command Prompt.....

If you don't have a Win ME boot disk, then download a diskmaker from
www.bootdisk.com (get the OEM Win ME one) and run the program to create the
boot disk, then use that to boot your PC.

I did run sytem restore from the command prompt however it was unable to
restore the system from the several restore points I tried. In addition
I did get the message that rstrui caused a problem with Kernal32.dll.

I've solved it, thank you. Thinking on from your suggestion to use
system restore I searched to see if there were old backup copies of
system files and I found a file called system.i~i. I had a look at
system.ini which contained some very strange entries so I replaced it
with system.i~i and it started up.

Ah!!!
The corrupted SYSTEM.INI!
thanks VERY much for the feedback - this is an unusual problem, but I
suspect that it may be caused by resetting the machine while it's still
trying to shut down normally (or hitting the power-off button).
This little bit of data may save lots of people from the frustration you
felt - so thanks again!

Good Luck!!!
