Default Safe Mode

My computer will not execute the defrag program. Someone
suggested starting in Safe Mode and then running the
defrag. That sounded like a good idea. Now I can not
start in Safe Mode. I went to the help for Safe Mode and
followed the instructions carefully. I tried by holding
down the control button several times and then I tried
using F8 several times. The computer starts in normal
windows configuration except I get a screen with text like
the old DOS screens that tells me to wait while the
computer check the configuration.
Any help will surely be appreciated.

See if anything here helps:

It's advisable to run Scandisk prior to Defragging.

Well I was chastised recently for suggesting the following methods to
boot into safe mode. Yes, holding down the Ctrl key is easier
particularly if you only want to get to safe mode for a one time
operation such as defrag.

As you have demonstrated it does not always work on the first try. In
addition there are occasions where one may want to repeatedly reboot
into safe mode. I was faced with this recently while removing a virus
which reconstructed its bad features if you didn't get it all when
editing the registry. Several reboots into safe mode were necessary.

At any rate try one of the following.

******************
1. Boot into normal mode

2. StartRun Type in "msconfig" (without quotes) and hit enter.

3. Click on the startup tab and then on Advanced.

4. In the "Advanced Troubleshooting Settings" check the box for
"Enable startup Menu".

5. Ok your way out and restart when you are asked if you want to
restart.

6. To get back to normal mode repeat the above sequence but uncheck
the box that enables the startup menu.
*****************

Also

1. StartProgramsAccessoriesSystem ToolsSystem Information.

2. Click on "Tools". System configuration Utility.

3. On the General Tab select Diagnostic Startup. OK and restart
windows.

On Win98 startup menu choose "SafeMode".

Repeat above and select normal mode to get out of Safe Mode startup.
*************

Usually if you open "Task Manager" and "End Task" for everything
EXCEPT Systray & Explorer you will be able to run Scandisk (first)
followed by Defrag.
