Failure on display driver update
Brian,
the adapter is ATI XPERT 128. P/N 1027440301. I don't use two adapters simultaneously, one or the other at a time. When the attempted driver update for the new one failed (ATI, PCI) I removed it and installed the adapter that I used before I bought the ATI (AGP). Can't install standard VGA because the system will only install the driver for whichever card is installed. The computer is custom built so there is no monitor port other than the one that is one whichever adapter I have installed at the time. I'll check out the BIOS idea. I've fiddled with it in the past so I know what I'm getting into. Thanks. -----Original Message----- "Pam" wrote in message ... Jeff and Brian - I will go through my procedure again after work tonight to see it I can spot any other bits of information. I did several scenarios, one of which is the one that Brian suggested. ie, - begin by reinstalling the old driver. Everything works fine - just can't make good use of my 21" monitor. This suggests incorrect or corrupted update drivers. What is the exact make/model of the adapter? - in safe mode, remove all display adapter and check the monitor (only one, Nokia 445pro - reinstalled it in one of the past scenarios - same result) - shut down. - start up - I see all the normal dos commands that load the cd rom and the disk controller and the hard drives That is the POST where you are seeing BIOS detection of the hardware. ...I see the windows logo. The BIOS has handed over the operations to Windows at this point. The screen goes blank and the monitor reports "Entering power save mode" (this is immediate, there is not a period of blank time) - when I press the monitor menu an error message tells me the the connection is ok but there is no input to the monitor. Might want to have a look in the BIOS at any power saving features and disable them for testing purposes. If no joy re-enable them. If you're not familiar/comfortable with the BIOS, then don't do anything without proper advice or you may have more trouble, one wrong move and BANG, computer won't boot. From what you mention in another response: quote 'Is the PC booting from the correct in the PC? Make sure that the PC is either booting from teh AGP slot if the card is AGP or PCI for a PCI based card.' One the two cards that I am switching between is AGP and the other is PCI. But how do I tell, and change, which the PC is booting from? /quote You never mentioned 2 cards before, are there? If not you may need to go into the BIOS and see if there is a setting to choose between AGP and PCI, select the one that the adapter is seated in. If you do have two adapters, shutdown and physically remove the one that we don't know of from inside the case and reboot. I hear the system grinding away doing something but I can't see it, of course. I tried to do the install from safe mode - didn't work from the cd because the cdrom is not available in safe mode. So I copied the contents of the cd to the hard drive (D) and tried the install in safe mode from the D drive. At first it looked like it would work - but I got an ATI error message that said 'severe error - try installing the standard vga driver first'. Try it again. In Safe Mode remove all Video devices. Install the Standard VGA driver. Shutdown. Open the case and make sure the adapter is properly seated. Reboot. -- Brian A. Failure on display driver update
Success! I did check the bios and only found a PCI/AGP
sequence - so continued with the physical switch of cards as I have been all the while. Fell upon success - details in my reply to Brian. Thanks for sticking with me. -----Original Message----- I think you are right that the tech is on to something. I hadn't twigged that there are two video adapters installed in the machine (although you did mention switching back to a different card). If you have an on-board AGP card and a plug-in PCI card you have to configure things a little carefully. If you were running two monitors then you would need to check for compatibility with the cards, and you would need to check which one was primary. But since you are running with a single monitor you only need to check that the system sees only the card that you want to use. This will be done in BIOS setup. It's accessed using a special key such as DEL or ESC or F1 (it's different for each type of BIOS) while the memory count ticks over at power-on. The key to use should be displayed on-screen at startup. If you are using the plug-in PCI card you must disable the on-board AGP card using the BIOS option. Hunt for the option under a heading of Devices or Device Options. If you are using a plug-in AGP card and a plug-in PCI card then the simplest option is to physically remove the card you aren't using. AFAIK this doesn't involve any BIOS setting, but you could check. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (DTS) "Pam" wrote in message ... BINGO!!
I was followed your sequence - didn't work as you describe because the hardware wizard insisted on finding a particular ATI file before it would go any farther - so I didn't get that 'No, it's not listed' choice.' In any case, as I was going through the sequence yet again I realized that all those times that I thought I was running the .exe that ATI sent me to complete remove vestages of any previous install, I wasn't really running it at all! I was unloading files to a folder. Did it right this time and the install worked. There's always a reason and it's usually something stupid. Many thanks to you and to Jeff for staying with me and feeding me ideas that kept me going.
