partition size
I read online that FAT32 allows 4TB partition limitation.
Does that mean that I can use FDISK on Win98 CD to create a 500GB partition. Install Win98 on it & the OS can use that whole partition? thank you. |

No. You're safe limit is ~137 GB.

But you need to use an updated version of fdisk, with a date of may 2000. The original fdisk that came on the win-98 CD's will not work. Install Win98 on it & the OS can use that whole partition? That depends. If the drive is an IDE (AKA Parallel ATA) then you will have a problem. An IDE drive is the older style of hard drive interface - it has a wide ribbon cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard. If you have that type of 500 gb hard drive, then you should not create a partition larger than 128 gb. In fact, you should not use more than the first 128 gb of the drive (ie most of the drive would have to be unformatted). If the drive is a SATA (Serial ATA) then most likely you will not have a problem, but only if you set the bios on your motherboard to RAID mode. The drive will be controlled by the RAID controller. I have formatted a 500 gb SATA drive as a single partition and installed and ran Windows-98 on it with no problems. If the drive is a USB drive, then I'm not sure if you can use all of it as a single partition or not. You should provide more information regarding what type of 500 gb drive you're considering. A lot has been written about this issue as it pertains to Windows 98. |

thats for NTFS. the limit for FAT32 is well 32GB. if you use a modification,
the limit is 137GB, or things may start to be lost / corrupted. "ML" wrote: I read online that FAT32 allows 4TB partition limitation. Does that mean that I can use FDISK on Win98 CD to create a 500GB partition. Install Win98 on it & the OS can use that whole partition? thank you. |

If you are trying to say that the limit for FAT32 is 32 gb, you are wrong. You can create a fat-32 partition that is 500 gb in size with no problem - and even modify it so it has a 4k cluster size - AND you can install Windows-98 on it if it's a SATA drive. If you are trying to say that Win-2k or Win-XP will NOT ALLOW YOU to create a fat32 partition larger than 32 gb, then yes that is correct, but that is an intentional limitation imposed by Microsoft on 2K and XP and has nothing to do with any real limitation of FAT32. If you create a FAT32 partition larger than 32 gb (using dos or other tools) then you can connect that partition to a machine running 2K or XP and it will function just fine. if you use a modification, the limit is 137GB, or things may start to be lost / corrupted. If you have an IDE (PATA) drive, and you *don't* use any modifications, then yes the limit is 137 gb (or 128 gb, depending on how you define a gb). IF you have a specially modified ESDI_506.PDR driver file, or if you have a SATA drive, then you can use partitions larger than 137 gb on a win-98 system. Note also that the original version of XP could not handle drives larger than 137 gb. Not sure about win-2k. |
