Default Focus On Desktop - My Computer

WinMe boots ok and Desktop loads ok but
there is no "Focus" on My Computer or on
any other Icon on the Desktop.
To get the "Focus" on My Computer icon I have to click anywhere on the
desktop Computer icon. Is it something to
do with the System Tray items?

Just a WAG - have you installed TweakUI recently? Are you sure the "Focus"
hasn't moved to My Documents?

Following warnings/notes reproduced with acknowledgement to the late
Koldbear

1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and click
Properties.

What happens when you press the right arrow key ONCE?

i.e. What icon did the new 'Focus' move FROM? (You can confirm this by
pressing the left arrow key ONCE)

Must admit, I'm out of further ideas or suggestion.

No answer to your question and I am running XP....just wanted to let you
know that my machine works the same way.
Initially, after boot, nothing is highlighted (in focus?) on the Desktop.
If I use one of the icons, it will remain highlighted until another is used,
an arrow key is pushed or I left click on a vacant area of the Desktop. I
always thought this was normal.....maybe I have something wrong, also?

Hi HL, yes, those were my first observations and so I couldn't follow quite
what AHH was meaning (a little light on detail). However, on closer
inspection of the 'First Icon' (as defined and designated in TweakUI), look
for the title of the icon and (depending on the colour scheme - possibly?)
you should see a feint box around the title - whereas no other icons are
marked in this manner.

If you click (the mouse) on a blank screen area (or press the left or right
arrow key), the (next) appropriate whole icon AND title actually become
highlighted.

And this is where AHH doesn't explain his problem - Although the 'First
Icon' title has the feint box around it (which I had assumed to be (his?)
definition of 'Focus') pressing the Return key doesn't actually start the
(associated) application. It is not until the icon AND title are 'properly'
highlighted (by clicking the mouse or pressing an arrow key) - as you also
have found - will the icon 'start'.

So I suppose the issue is really - what does AHH define as 'Focus'? i.e. is
it the feint box around the icon's title, or the icon AND title highlighted
proper?

Therefore I would agree with you HL :-

I always thought this was normal.....
maybe I have something wrong, also?

Maybe his (your?) colour scheme doesn't show the feint box?

If, on the other hand AHH expected My Computer to be activated by simply
pressing the Return key or the My Computer icon AND title to be highlighted
on the opening screen - thus allowing a press of the Return key to activate
My Computer - then my opinion is that it shouldn't. - Well it certainly
doesn't here!

Mart
When the desktop is loaded the dotted line
feint box appears on the first icon but when all the automatically
started programs are fully
loaded, the dotted line feint box disappears.
Clicking on blank spot on the desktop, the
dotted line feint box comes back on the
first icon on the desktop.
Arrow key- to right or to down - will fully highlight the next icon to
start it with Enter key
On my Win98 machine there are not very many automatically loading programs
and once the boot process is completed, the
dotted line feint box is always there and with
arrow key the next icon is fully higlighted.

WinMe used to be the same but not now.

Thanks AAH, so your reply, by implication seems to confirm that you regard
the dotted line feint box as the "Focussed" icon.

As to why it *appears* to become 'Un-Focussed' after the automatically
started programs are loaded, I have no idea - but plenty of theories,
probably none of which could be proved g. And whether it's System Tray
related, you may have to disable items on the Tray, one-at-a-time, to see if
you can isolate the possible offender. However, at least you can console
yourself that it actually *is* still "Focussed", even if the feint box is
not visible - as you have actually confirmed yourself.

Just curious though - and you don't have to answer. Is this causing you an
operational issue or is it just a 'cosmetic' annoyance? I suppose it *might*
be an iconcache issue and perhaps a Rebuild Icons operation on the Paranoia
tab in TweakUI *may* fix it.
