Help with laptop choice please
Hi
I'm hoping the gurus still hang out in here like they used to :-) I've been looking at getting a laptop and am sorely tempted by a MacBook Pro 17" for it's looks and light weight for the size. One thing I can't seem to find is if there is a way you can load win XP on the thing on it's own or if you need to load an Apple OS in first and piggy back XP off of that - my google skills seem weak as I can't seem to find a definitive answer - I'm hoping there's a kludge somewhere - either that or does this combination work ok without a big performance hit TIA for any pointers Tim -- http://www.timdenning.myby.co.uk/ |

I'd say, get the MacBook Pro, by all means!
if there is a way you can load win XP on the thing on it's own or if you need to load an Apple OS in first and piggy back XP off of that You can do that very simply with Apple's (free) Boot Camp: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ It's even more satisfying (and capable) to do it with Parallels Workstation: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...rkstation.html Parallels will work with more operating systems and other versions of Windows. Besides, you can drag and drop between environments. With Boot Camp, you can only use XP and have to reboot to access the Mac resources. This is likely to be a better choice for Windows games. But Parallels is probably more satisfying for other uses. Me, I use a PPC iMac. :/ But really for info of this sort, it really pays to access the Mac newsgroups. |

Thank you for the help Malcolm Which NG to post in was a bit of a coin toss, could get flammed some in Mac groups, last time I was in the XP groups they were just bear pits, and I've posted here in the past and found great people prepared to help so this one it was! Thanks for the info - I'd googled a bit and seemed to be going in circles a bit - didn't really help not knowing quite what to look for - Reading up on Boot Camp and PW should do the trick Best regards Tim -- http://www.timdenning.myby.co.uk/ |

Thank you for the help Malcolm
My pleasure, Tim. I want to get a MacBook Pro too and put my 98SE environment into Parallels. I don't think you'll catch any flames for raising these issues in the Mac groups. |
