Default reinstalling Windows Me

I am working on my old computer which has Windows ME as
its OS. I think I deleted a system file because now it
will not boot up at all (not even in Safe Mode). I have
the original Window's ME CD. My question is: How do I
reinstall Windows ME from the CD or do I have to copy it
to a floppy disc and then use that? and if so how do I
use a floppy to reinstall the OS? Or does anyone have any
other suggestions? Thanks for any suggestions. C

You might want to try this before reinstall:

Start by restoring the registry to a previous (working) date:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\ prompt type

C: (press enter)

Now type:

cd windows\command (press enter)

Your prompt should read C:\Windows\Command, correct?

Now type:

scanreg /restore (space between g and /)

Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for the
process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If you don't have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com.

Any luck?

Zee

Before trying either of Zee's suggestions, you may want to try a System
Restore - look here for instructions....

Hi,

I had the same problem as you where my OS crashed and I
could not get on. We had a computer person look at it
and he had to install Windows 2000. But here is my
problem, I lost everything even Microsoft Word.

Question....Did you get Windows ME to work yet??? Or did
you load and more recent version??

I'm trying to contact Microsoft but I'm not having any
luck.

Please reply to this email if you have any updates

Thanks

I am going to try getting a boot disk off the internet
and then using system restore as per the website that
Noel Paton recommended, it is a microsoft website. If
that does not work then I will have to try reinstalling
windows ME from my CD. I will let you know how it went
maybe in a few days time.

Whatever the results of your experiences with the site to which I sent you,
I'd be grateful for careful notes taken along the way - either in case of
success, or even more especially, failure

DETAILS are the things which make systems repairable - and the more detail
the better (even if it's tedious, check the spelling, as one letter wrong
can make a world of difference in the potential fix!)

Good Luck

I have tried to use system restore on my computer. I
booted it up with a startup disk I got down from
www.bootdisk.com and as it came up with the prompt a:, I
used Zee's suggestions to restore the computer. It
restored to a previous date but on restart I had the same
problem as previously. The message I got was
WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS and WINDOWS\DISPLAY.SYS are either
missing or corrupted followed by the message that whilst
installing device IFSMGR 'Microsoft installable File
System Manager cannot find the helper driver. Please
ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed. System halted.

As I seem to be missing some files or they are corrupted,
could you please tell me how to reload Windows ME from my
reinstallation CD that came with the computer from Dell.
Thanks

I have read the instructions from the page that you
suggested but my startup disk does not come up with a
Startup menu just the prompt a:, do I then just enter the
edit command (line no 3) as per the instructions?

Would doing a system restore reload the problem files or
do i still need to do a restore of Windows ME from my
DEll reinstallation CD? If so how do I do it?
