Linksys Gigabit NIC
Having a problem on one machine (I'm advising remotely, so can't really dig
into the thing...) Win98SE which has DUN and did have a NIC showing in Safe Mode though it's not onboard and must have been removed some time ago. Installed Linksys NIC (10/100/1000 Model EG1032, v3), installed drivers, restarted when prompted and get Windows Protection Error (no other info.) Went into Safe Mode, removed all adapters and cleared Network applet, then restarted, reinstalled NIC, same thing happened. Changed slot, no difference. Haven't tried different NIC yet, haven't tried the Linksys NIC in a different machine. Thought I'd post the problem here and see if anyone has experienced similar. -- Gary S. Problem was that I had set the NIC to 8k jumbo frame size - Win98 didn't like that. When changed to 4k, it booted and worked fine. |

This is a jumper or DIP switch on the card itself? Or something I have to
set in Safe Mode? I'll take another look at Linksys KB with the below in mind. -- Gary S. Network properties NIC Adapter properties Advanced tab. You may want to look
at the link speed also and make sure it's not set for or trying to use the Auto-negotiate 1000 Mbps. Also if it's set to Autodetect you may want to set it for 100Mbps/Full Duplex to keep it from any attempt at the higher speed. -- Brian A. Linksys Gigabit NIC
Good info, thanks! One problem is, I'm working through getting this
installed before there's actually anything to connect to, in advance of ordering DSL. I've never seen this cause problems with a NIC installation before, but there's always that first time. And, of course, there's the handicap of working long-distance to support a system that I'm already fairly certain has major issues. -- Gary S. Unfortunately it appears it won't even maintain boot with the drivers installed,
I'd definitely try another make/model card. I had that same exact issue with a Netgear NIC in one 98SE machine, yet every other machine I tried it in had no problem at all. Swapped it out for an IBM card and had no issues at all. I also had a lesser issue with an integrated 10/100/1000 interface and a Core 2 Duo processor installed. The damn thing kept switching to Auto-negotiate 1000 Mbps shortly after I set it back to Auto-negotiate, so I was forced to set it at 100Mbps/Full Duplex to break it's spirit. I've looked at a few Gig capable routers but I won't toss money on that fairly new technology. 'The only good it would do me at this time would be if I wanted to beef the LAN up a little for faster transfers. Three XP Pro machines here have 10/100/1000 which will be obsolete when/if they finally get the up and around those speeds. -- Brian A. Regarding the various problems with PCI cards - sometimes it's
necessary to move them to other slots away from the AGP slot. Regarding NIC settings - usually you don't have a choice to set it to 1000 mhz. While you do have choices to set it to 10 or 100 (half or full) to get 1 gig you usually have to set it to auto. If you force 1 gig on wiring that can't take it, you usually won't get anything. The NIC's I was putting in Win-98 machines was D-Link - DGE-530T ($26). During install I toyed with the settings and forced jumbo frame size (8k). I backed it off to 4k and then got it to boot properly into windoze. Regarding switches, I replaced our old Intel 10/100 switches with a D-Link - DGS-1224T - 24-Port Layer 2 Gigabit Switch ($400) about 6 weeks ago. All machines that have 1-gig NIC's are now operating at 1-gig. |
