Hi,
I recklessly re-installed Windows Me on my PC using my recovery
CD-ROM.
Now I can't access all my old programs and would like to return to my
old setup if possible. A 5.46 GB WINOLD folder has been added to my
present setup, and I guess I have to use this to return the machine to
its original state. Could anyone PLEASE help me with step-by-step
instructions as I'm new to this.
Many thanks,

Michael

Michael,

If you used a manufacturer's recovery CD your first step should be to read the
documentation that came with the PC/CD. Microsoft don't provide recovery CDs,
these are produced by the computer manufacturer's themselves and each varies
one from the other. If you were to provide some basic details such as make
and model of PC there is a possibility that someone reading these newsgroups
will have experience of that OEM's recovery CD and be able to help you with
your query.

Thanks for your feedback.

My PC is an Advent 8302 with Intel Pentium 4/1.5 GHz and 256Mb RDRAM
and 80 GB Hard Drive

When I unwisely re-installed Windows Me using the Advent Product
Recovery CD ROM and Recovery Disk Supplement - Version 8302, a file
called WINOLD was created.

I now want to return to my original setup and would appreciate some
help.
Above all, I don't want to lose my original setup. I am strictly a
newcomer to this area !

If I just entered:
"REN \WINDOWS WINNEW"
then
"REN \WINOLD WINDOWS"
would that do the trick ? Is there anything else I need to do ?

Many thanks in advance for your help

Michael

As I said you need to read the documentation that came with your PC.
Microsoft don't produce recovery CDs. I have no idea why Advent chose to
reinstall Win Me in they way they have. In fact I am unaware of any other OEM
recovery CD that would leave you with a WINOLD (or similar) folder. Recovery
CDs normally either restore the hard disk and PC to the state it was in when
the system was first delivered or alternatively carry out an in place or
repair reinstall where Win Me is reinstalled over itself.

I now want to return to my original setup and would appreciate some
help.

This would quite possibly trash your system. Not knowing what is in WINOLD
and what in WINDOWS, and which folders and files and in which location are
being referenced from the registry I would proceed with the most extreme
caution.

Many thanks in advance for your help
