Default Display and Mouse problems on start up

Every time I boot up my display is at 640x480, my colors
are set to 16 and my mouse is not visible. Tried changing
the settings but they are lost when I boot up again. My
mouse is visible in Safe Mode. Everything seemed ok in
Device Manager. I am not set up to run VGA (video adapter
looks ok). msconfig settings look ok. I don't know
anything about regedit - could there be a problem in the
registry? I have tried uninstalling the mouse driver
software, downloading IntelliPoint 4.1 and re-installing.
This didn't resolve the problem and Device Manager now
shows a problem with my mouse driver which I can't fix - I
suspect the underlying problem is preventing my fixing
this. Any suggestions anyone?

Go to the manufacturers site for your video chip/adapter and download/install the
latest updated drivers per their instructions. For the mouse, start up in Safe Mode,
go to Device Manager and remove any/all mouse devices, close out, reboot and Windows
will redetect/reinstall.

Thanks for your reply Brian. I did uninstall my mouse
driver and Windows did not prompt me for a new driver. I
will try and remove all mouse devices in safe mode and see
if I get prompted for a new device. I am unwilling to
uninstall the video driver until I get the mouse going
again. Will let you know what happens.

Do Not Uninstall the video driver before changing it to Standard VGA. Although it
can be done, problems may occur from it.

Removed all mouse devices. Shut down. Restrated.
Windows automatically installed mouse driver. Restarted.
Still no mouse showing. Any more suggestions? I did
notice that my system.ini file options in msconfig were
some kind of code (ie. not in English). Don't know if
this is normal?

No it is not normal for the System.ini to look like jibberish.
In Normal mode, if you can, press the Windows key Up arrow key Run and press
Enter, Type in sysedit and press Enter.
Press the Alt+W keys to get the dropdown menu, use the Up arrow key to get to
System.ini and press Enter.
Does it show jibberish as well? What shows on the line Shell=Explorer.exe if you can
read it? If anything is after Explorer.exe then you have a problem with a virus or
other type of parasite. Delete anything after Explorer.exe after noting it down for
research to identify it.
Next press alt+w and select the Win.ini. Look at the lines: Load= and Run= , there
should be nothing after the = with the exception of the Run line, sometimes it will
have a printer notification app set to run if the ink gets low or other similar apps.
If something is after either and it looks suspicious, remark out the line/s for now
by typing REM press the spacebar.
Press Alt+F, arrow down to Save if you made changes and press Enter, otherwise arrow
down to Exit and press Enter.

Post back with results. You may be able to reinstall Windows over the top to see if
it helps or even extract a new System.ini, both of which I do not suggest as of yet.

I would at this point suggest running a full system virus scan that is fully updated
in either Safe Mode or DOS. Also check for any spyware that may have been installed:

**It is pertinent to run the update for each program before running to be sure you
have the latest definitions.**
Download/run Cool Web Shredder from:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

For Info on Cool Web Search Variants:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Then download/install/run Ad-Aware to detect/rid of any other parasites/spyware that
may be installed. It can be obtained free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the latest
up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it finds.

And/or download/install/run:
Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?l...&page=download
Run it at it's default settings until you learn an know more about it. Spybot S&D is
more of an advanced users tool and changing from the default settings can be
dangerous to the novice user. Items found in the default settings that are RED can
usually be safely removed. If you are unsure of a found item, do not remove it and
ask for help.

If you still have problems, download/run HijackThis from:
http://www.merijn.org/

Do not remove anything with it until you get advice on what to remove, HJThis will
list many apps that are needed along with the bad ones. Removing items listed
hap-hazardly without knowing what they are can/will create a royal mess. Read the
quick start here on how to create a log file that can be copied/pasted into a forum
that can provide assistance on removal of unwanted pests.
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/#quick

Then post the logs to an appropriate NG here where they specialize in
spyware/hijacker removal:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

It's also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to HOSTS File
Manager he
http://www.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm

Another good app is SpywareBlaster which stops the badboys before they even get a
chance to install:

Will try what you suggest later. I do have Ad Aware, but
need an updated file. Also some McAffee (I think) anti

The last issue can be resolved by installing the drivers
for your video card.

Based on the information that you have provided,
the mouse and sound problems reported by you (and MANY others)
would seem to be related to the settings in SYSTEM.INI

Please click Start, then Run,
type SYSTEM.INI and press the Enter key
to open the file with Notepad.

Then click on Edit and choose "Select All",
then right-click and select Copy.

Then paste the copied information into a reply to this post.
We can then look at it to figure out what the problems are.

I am at work now so will Post my System.ini file when I
get home. Update from yesterdays activities:
I now have a mouse (when I do not run my system.ini file
on start up - though every time I log in the buttons are
reversed (I can change this after logging in). In my
system.ini file I have *DisplayFallback=0 after
shell=Explorer.exe in the top section. There are other
sections below, with [Diplay] at the bottom - with nothing
under it. If I remove *DisplayFallback=0 it is added next
time I log on. There is a note at the top of the
system.ini file stating that the file is not actually run,
it's the system.t(something - I can't remember) that is
run. This looks like compiled code when I open it in
notepad.
I also updated and ran ad-aware and cwshredder and stinger
(though I couldn't find an update connection for this)
with no suspect files being detected.
