How do I uninstall-reinstall external CDROM
Win98se
Compaq LTE5300 laptop Pentium I, 133MHz, 24MB RAM, 1 GB HDD Bantam Backpack 181100 24x PP CDROM The laptop is having a lot of problems. It has not been powered up in a long time. When I powered it up, the BIOS did not detect that a hard drive was attached. I removed and reinserted the hard drive, and the BIOS now detects it, but Windows does not boot properly. It seems to freeze on one of the driver files for the external Bantam Backpack CDROM (something like bpcdrom.sys). I want to remove and reinstall this device. How do I completely remove its drivers without removing the CD drivers that are part of Win98? The Win98se startup disk CD drivers do not work for this external CD drive. If I uninstall the device, will DOS and Windows "see" the drive when I reboot so I can reinstall the drivers? There are two separate installers: 16-bit DOS drivers and 32-bit Windows drivers. I believe both are installed. The operating system moves extremely slow, and I'm also considering a reformat and reinstall of Windows. The problem is that the laptop has no internal CDROM drive, only a floppy, and I need to be able to use that external CDROM in DOS to reload Windows. Any help is appreciated. |

You can boot to safe mode to remove problem devices.
Removing a device such as this does not prevent you from using Windows drivers for a standard CD drive. However, the backpack CD is not a standard Windows device, and Windows will not see it unless you install the drivers it requires. Once you have removed it you can search the manufacturer's www site for the required drivers and re-install them. The DOS drivers should be installed onto the Windows startup disk. Do the install and test the startup floppy before re-formatting the drive. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "SeaMaid" wrote in message ... The problem there is that CDROM drives do not show up in safe mode -- not
even in Device Manager. That is why I asked how do you remove the drivers. They do not show in Add-Remove Programs either. "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ... In order to put the DOS drivers on the Windows 98se startup disk, I need to
know what system files on the startup disk can be REMOVED first. There is not enough room otherwise. The DOS drivers and readme.txt for the Backpack come to about 245kb. While the CD-ROM drives might not show up in safe mode, the devices will be
listed in Device Manager and can be removed from there. Do not try to remove them from add/remove programs. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "SeaMaid" wrote in message ... The depends on what startup disk you are using. Do not include the readme
file as you do not need it. Print it out and have it available as hardcopy instead. Remove any utility you will not be using, or remove any of the device drivers that are not relevant to your system. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "SeaMaid" wrote in message ... I think you would need about 80kb.

There is mention in one of the troubleshooting articles about existing CDROM
drivers causing conflicts. Both the 16-bit and 32-bit Backpack drivers are installed. I can try deleting the Backpack directories that I see in C:\, but I am not sure this will get them all. There may be Backpack drivers and/or references to them somewhere in the Windows folder and in the registry. I can go into MSCONFIG to remove all references from the system files shown there. I need to be able to have access to this drive both in DOS and in Windows. "mae" wrote in message ... I think you would need about 80kb. On their site is detail of almost everything you could encounter, print them
out for guidance. Boot to safe mode and go to: settingcontrol panellook for Backpack Icon if there, click and review your options uncheck the option to search on startup or can remove from devices (follow Jeff's suggestions) or uninstall backpack driver at control panel add/remove programs or if not there, run uninstall similar to: [C:\Program Files\Backpack] BPUNINST.EXE or run the setup program from the original diskette and choose uninstall or reinstall (there are only a few files depending on version) If you need new drivers download and put on a floppy to reinstall. The 16 bit drivers are used only under DOS and dropped when Windows loads. You don't have another CD rom to conflict, do you? If you are wanting to reinstall your OS, follow their instructions but verify boot disk works (as Jeff suggested) and that you can access the drive and your Windows disk before formatting. Copy some file from it to "C" to test. That is about all I can suggest. Good Luck. -- mae "SeaMaid" wrote in message ... | There is mention in one of the troubleshooting articles about existing CDROM | drivers causing conflicts.
