Very slow
Ping: Noel Paton
In July 2003, Cheryl had a similar problem: slow startup due, if my memory serves me right: 3 GB in 66,000 files in 5 folders in her hidden file _Restore. You traced the problem in the hidden folder C:\_Restore\Temp. Then I left on holidays and lost track. Could you please help me with: Slow computer: in the same folder, its properties give: 948 MB in 3000 files and 5 folders, all CPY files, very few zero, several fairly large files, the oldest ones are back in 2001... I remember a few questions: here are my answers: . Using Norton NIS .Using manual mode updates .There is a WININIT.INI file in the C:\Windows folder .Free space in C: 14 out of 20 GB .Actual Space taken in the c:\_Restore folder 313 MB set near Min .No WININIT.ERR file in Windows .Not running GoBack Note that not allowed to delete any of those TEMP files in C:\_Restore\Temp files "access denied...etc" Would appreiate if you could help. Tks in advance. Paul |

3000 files in the c:\_Restore hierarchy is a little excessive - but not impossibly so. What size is your HD? don't worry about the date of the CPY files - that's the date of the files that they're copies of, rather than the date the CPY files were created. I suspect here that we have the 'normal' corruption created by Norton. First reboot, then if the WININIT.INI file still exists, open the WININIT.INI file in NotePad, copy the contents to your response, then close Notepad, and rename the file to WININIT.JNK. Then Start|Run type SCANREG /FIX click OK - Windows will reboot Check again for the WININIT.INI file, and delete it if it's still there! then leave the system alone for at least half an hour, and see if anything has happened to your SR archive contents. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "PAT (pAUL)" PAT wrote in message ... I would read them all...the only WININIT.INI I found is in the run|msconfig|selective startup=win.ini file, is that the same?By the way the first file above opens in DOS and is an .EXE FILE. I'm at a lost what to do to get rid of those TEMP files in the _restore file...which may or may not slow my CPU, your guest is better (a lot) than mine. Tks Noel for the time PAT (Paul) |

Sounds like your PATH is being misdirected.....
in MSCONFIG, look in the Environment tab - what's there? The PATH statement should just read C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND (note, no spaces) if it reads anything else, use the Edit button, and change the variable value to that above, after making a note of the current value - which you should post back so we can have a look. Noel. very slow.
You suggest: The PATH statement should just read C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\IBMTOOLS (note, no spaces) if it reads anything else, use the Edit button, and change the variable value to that above, after making a note of the current value - which you should post back so we ca________________ Noel: re very slow: Nov 2/04 227pm Did what you suggested: edited the PATH to read: C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\IBMTOOLS In the environment tab of MSCONFIG and rebooted. That looks pretty good, for System Restore - rather more files than I'd like
for only 5.1MB - but not impossible OTOH, if you have more than one or two points available for System Restore, it's almost certainly an indicator that SR is broken, and needs to be reset. To Reset System Restore - System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable System Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then, System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart. Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder, System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider to your preferred setting. Most people find that a setting of 200-300MB is sufficient to hold 10-15 days worth of restore points, unless you are doing a lot of installs/uninstalls, or installing large applications (such as Office). -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "PAT (Paul)" wrote in message ...
