need windows 98 disk
I haven't used a computer for awhile, had it unplugged.
Went to set it up for son to use for games and it said it discovered new hardware! AC 5618 sound modem or something like that and to reinstall the driver. I cannot find my windows 98 disk anywhere, tried going to microsoft for download, can't figure out what I need...son is driving me crazy, wants to play games, but no fun with no sound...any suggestions? thank you |

You don't need the W98 disk. What you need is a disk with the
driver software. Here is a site where you can download this driver software http://www.modem-drivers.com/companies/24.htm Note this a combination sound card - modem card. You might also look on your C drive for a folder with a copy of the W98 CD. The files in this folder will look like Win98xx.cab, where xx are numbers from 01 through the 60's. Start looking by looking for a folder C:\windows\Options\cabs as this is the most common place for pre-installed windows disks to be copied. "C Flora" wrote in message ... Otherwise see if you have the Win98 CAB files on your HD as Richard suggested. Search for BASE4.CAB. If found it will be in a folder with dozens of CAB files. Point to that folder when you are asked for the CD. Setup.exe will probably be in the folder and that means you can install Win 98 from the folder. need windows 98 disk
If none of the advice you've been given works, try eBay for
an OEM CD of Windows 98. And remember that its a good idea to copy the contents of the CD to a different partition or an additional hard drive. Hard drives are very cheap. Installing a second drive as a backup drive is a good idea. You can then use the free XXCopy from http://www.xxcopy.com/ to clone the system to a different partition on the same hard drive or to a second hard drive. You just install XXCOPY and then enter the command xxcopy c:\*.* D: /clone to clone the system to the second hard drive, which is D: but could be given another letter depending on the partitions and drives that are on the system. The second drive is D: on my Windows 98 system. The clone is bootable, which means that if you change the boot order in the BIOS to make the second hard drive the boot drive, the system will boot, because the D: drive becomes the C: drive. It is an"Action Media" Modem driver. As far as I see it
is made by "PCTel". Go to: http://www.driverguide.com/ You will need to register. It is free and they do not send any spam. Once registered go to: http://list.driverguide.com/list/company24/index.html Or do a search for AC 5618 in their search. Good Luck! -----Original Message----- I haven't used a computer for awhile, had it unplugged. Went to set it up for son to use for games and it said it discovered new hardware! Granny,
You should have made this a NEW post. Not a REPLY to a simular post. You will get more success in getting an answer to your problem that way. But to your problem. Open Device Manager. Through Control Panel/System/Device Manager tab. See if the DVD drive is listed and if there is any yellow marks in front of it. If you have the Driver CD for it? You may try to remove it from Device Manager list and reboot PC let Windows find it and then direct the driver request to the CD. -----Original Message----- I am having a slighly different problem.
