Anti-virus for ME
RTS wrote (in the basically defunct windows ME newsgroup):
Greetings Group. I'm re-installing ME on an old laptop for some legacy software. And was wondering if there any current anti-virus programs that will still work on ME.. I've answered you in the past when you've asked this same question. And my answer is still the same. You don't need to be running any sort of anti-virus software for windows 9x/me. You haven't needed that for at least the past 10 years. There are no browser exploits that are in use today (and quite frankly there may never have been any) that can trip up a 9x/me system and cause it to run exploit code or download secondary viral payload. And I'd be very surprised if there was even any exploit code sent along as an email attachment that you'd be fool enough to execute that would run as intended on a 9x/me system today. Have I explained myself? Got any more questions? And by the way, you'd be better off running win-9x with kernelEx and with some other mods (like the extended ram hack) than you would be running that abortion known as Windows Millenium. |

Wow, you really are angry about ME! ;-) What do you know about networking W98se running on MVPC-2007 on Windows 7 to the W7 Host? I have not been able to get W98se and W7 to see each other at all using the MS Loopback Adapter on W7. Tried all the networking W98 to W7 advise I could find online. None of it works for me. |

Win-98 virtual access to win-7 host drive (was: Anti-virus for ME)

Wow, you really are angry about ME! ;-) I guess I should lighten up a little. If a Win-ME CD is all you have, I guess it's what you'll end up using. I have so many MSFT CD's and software packages and activation keys available to me, not everyone does... What do you know about networking W98se running on MVPC-2007 on Windows 7 to the W7 Host? One of our developers has exactly that - MVPC-2007 running on Win-7 and a win-98 virtual image. I don't use the virtual stuff. I asked him to check on the drive access between win-98 and host, and there are settings you will need to mess with on the host MVPC interface. I don't know if he was able to do it - I'll ask tommorrow. I can tell you that on the virtual win-98 he can see shared folders on a win-2k system on the network. I can also tell you that on two separate PC's, one running 7 and the other win-98se, that I can access a shared folder on the 98 machine from win-7 with no problems. I've mapped the shared drive, probably had to specify it directly because I probably couldn't discover it on the win-7 machine just browsing the network. |

Win-98 virtual access to win-7 host drive

Nothing much new to report, other than we've confirmed that a shared folder (full read/write access, no password) on the win-98 virtual machine can be seen and accessed by the host win-7 system. Just to confirm - we have “Windows Virtual PC” (aka XP Mode, successor to Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, and Connectix Virtual PC) The Vpc.exe version is 6.1.7601.17514 dated: Nov 20, 2010. |

That seems to be the only way to share anything between Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Not Windows 7 Virtual PC nor XP-Mode) running Windows 98se virtual machines and Windows 7/64-bit Ultimate. I guess I will just have to live with that fact; but it would be nice if everything operated in the normal networking sense, where all machines in the 'Entire (virtual) Network' were visible and could interact with each other. I have no problem networking virtual W98SE machines locally within MVPC-2007, and no problem with Virtual Machine Additions 2004 or 2007 Share Folders; I just have a problem with networking Windows 98se to/from Windows 7 on the "Entire Network." |

Anti-virus for ME
Greetings 98Guy
Good to see a few still stop by the ME group.. Sorry If I over looked one of your earlier replies.. I reached that age where I forget thing on a minute by minute progression..Â*Â* LOL Yes the anti virus thing does seem to be a moot point, and I don't even plan to be on the web with that computer. But,Â* you never know when an update might come in handy for some ole software..Â*Â* ;-) Currently I'm running "Rufus" on a dos USB stick.. Got most of my use-able software on that. Only problem is a printer interface, "Rufus" tends to only see "Rufus" I'm tryingÂ* to relearn DOS and all it's little fun things.. Tks, again, glad to see folks still on the group.. *Rocky T.
