Default Illegal operation

I am glad it is fixed too. So, the system date, hmm. I would have come
up with that, had you said Windows Update wasn't working. However, the
machine never boot well enough to go there. I suppose that Dell person

button, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, Version Conflict Manager". It will
show which files were replaced. But let us hope that Dell guy did what

| | | | It all started over the weekend. I tried to

| | | It

Default Illegal operation

Well, money was paid. The system director should hold this Dell person's
feet to the fire. Start up DrWatson, I guess, to see what it may say,
when it traps a crash. If one of them isn't a total monster, perhaps
un/re-install one of those three apps that is crashing.

| | the option of doing Fresh Install. The Director decided
| | to hire person to fix it. At least I could tell him
| what
| | I had tried.
| |
| | He came and updated IE, determined that the system date
| | was in error and fixed that. He did this in less than
| | hour. I don't know how date got changed but now realize

| |

| | I would also think a lightning strike to do other than
| | this. You are
| | practiced in a Fresh Install, but it may be different
| | with the Dell.
| | Naturally, anything not included on the Dell CD(s)
| would
| | have to be
| | reinstalled afterwards. You must find a way to backup
| | all important
| | files/downloads, before doing a fresh install. (Some
| say
| | to do so before
| | even an over-install.) Did those three misbehaving
| apps
| | come with the
| | Dell? I can't quite tell what "Recover Hard Drive
| | without Format" is
| | saying. I do know, my Compaq QuickRestore CD(s) do
| allow
| | selective
| | restore of many Compaq drivers. Perhaps that is what
| | Dell's "Refresh the
| | Operating System" might do.
| |
| | | Computer is getting "program has performed illegal
| | | operation and will be shut down". But I cannot do
| | | anything but manually turn off the computer.
| |
| | | "This program has performed an illegal operation and
| | will
| | | be shut down".
| |
| | Let us see whether DrWatson will say more...
| |
| | "START, Run, DRWATSON"; now, D-Clk it's button in the
| | Tray.
| |
| | What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste
| | it's contents,
| | using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the
| | Tray. It sits
| | waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into
| | the Diagnosis tab.
| |
| | (a) "START, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe". (Should be
| | in "C:\Windows".)
| | (b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop
| | (Create shortcut)".
| | (c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".
| | (d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start
| | Menu\Programs\StartUp"
| | (e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".
| |
| | Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a
| | crash or a D-Clk.

| | |
| | | (a) Some say an over-install of Windows will lead

Default Illegal operation

Please let me explain this is no Dell person but person
who started up his business recently from what I
understand. I respect most of the Dell people who have
helped me along with most MS-MVPs.

Well, money was paid. The system director should hold

this Dell person's
feet to the fire. Start up DrWatson, I guess, to see

what it may say,
when it traps a crash. If one of them isn't a total

monster, perhaps
un/re-install one of those three apps that is crashing.

install

to

decided
| | to hire person to fix it. At least I could tell him
| what
| | I had tried.
| |
| | He came and updated IE, determined that the system

date
| | was in error and fixed that. He did this in less

than
| | hour. I don't know how date got changed but now

realize
| | that it was probably reason that the Trend Micro

free

date
| | problem with that.
| |
| | At least I was able to hand him MS security cd and

he

| | I would also think a lightning strike to do other

than
| | this. You are
| | practiced in a Fresh Install, but it may be

different
| | with the Dell.
| | Naturally, anything not included on the Dell CD(s)
| would
| | have to be
| | reinstalled afterwards. You must find a way to

backup
| | all important
| | files/downloads, before doing a fresh install.

(Some
| say
| | to do so before
| | even an over-install.) Did those three misbehaving
| apps
| | come with the
| | Dell? I can't quite tell what "Recover Hard Drive
| | without Format" is
| | saying. I do know, my Compaq QuickRestore CD(s) do
| allow
| | selective
| | restore of many Compaq drivers. Perhaps that is

what
| | Dell's "Refresh the
| | Operating System" might do.
| |
| | | Computer is getting "program has performed

illegal
| | | operation and will be shut down". But I cannot do
| | | anything but manually turn off the computer.
| |
| | | "This program has performed an illegal operation

and
| | will
| | | be shut down".
| |
| | Let us see whether DrWatson will say more...
| |
| | "START, Run, DRWATSON"; now, D-Clk it's button in

the
| | Tray.
| |
| | What diagnosis is on the first tab?

Copy/paste
| | it's contents,
| | using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the
| | Tray. It sits
| | waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info

into
| | the Diagnosis tab.
| |
| | (a) "START, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe". (Should be
| | in "C:\Windows".)
| | (b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop
| | (Create shortcut)".
| | (c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, &

select "Cut".
| | (d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start
| | Menu\Programs\StartUp"
| | (e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".
| |
| | Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a
| | crash or a D-Clk.

| | | I found post by Dell Moderator ChrisM about using
| | | resource/system cd for the Windows install.
| Computer is
| | | Dell. I have only installed Windows ME with
| formatting
| | | the HD first about 3 times, and installing

Windows
| XP
| | Pro
| | | once after I screwed up IIS.
| | |
| | | I do not know what exactly happened since

employee

non-

| | her
| | | computer to send email with attachment and

computer

| | | left on over week-end. Lightning striked

electrical

I

three

| | | What program do you have that is giving the

wording
| | you
| | | use... "Refresh

without

| | |
| | | (a) Some say an over-install of Windows will

lead
| | | to "DLL-hell". Have
| | | you done it before?
| | |
| | | (b) A fresh install of Windows can also go bad,

as
| | many
| | | a thread here
| | | can attest. Have you ever done it before?
| | |
| | | (c) Those sound to be big apps that you

mention...
| | | PCCguide, Mymail, &
| | | Quick Books Pro. If it were just one, I'd

suggest
| | un/re-
| | | install that.
| | | However, as three have gone bad, I'm thinking

it is
| | | something else that
| | | is affecting all three.
| | |
| | | When did this all start? What is last thing you
| did--
| | an
| | | install of
| | | something?
