Um, I initially mentioned Flash 9, and you brought up Flash 10 and said it
was required, and I was showing to you that Flash 9 is the one that adobe
says that older unsupported systems should use.

Oh. OK, all I can tell you is that I was using Flash 9 not long ago, and
when I went to the YouTube website, it had some message about needing to
update my flash version, which I did, and after that there was no problem in
seeing the video (this was on my WinXP system).

So if Adobe doesn't explicitly state that Flash 10 is incompatible with
Win98SE (e.g: it states that XP or Vista is required), and you still want to
watch YouTube videos, I'd sure give it a try, preferably if you have a image
or clone backup of your system, in case to you need to go back to Flash 9.
(Or if Flash 10 doesn't work on Win98SE, you could try uninstalling it and
reinstalling Flash 9).

And if:
* YouTube videos (or at least some of them) DO require Flash10, AND
* flash10 isn't compatible with '98,
then your only option is to download them and play them in something
else. To download them, you'd need to ignore any such error message when
loading the page, and use a FireFox plugin that makes the downloading of
YouTube videos easier. (I use DownloadHelper, but [a] I don't know if it
works under '98 - I'm using XP, where it does, and [b] "other download
helper plugins are available".)

If you find you have to do this (and find a way of doing it that works),
you still need to find something to play them with; VLC is pretty good
and there are certainly versions that work on '98, though I'm not sure
if the latest version does (anyone?). Note also that for a lot of
YouTube videos nowadays, you'll get two options, the normal and an HD
one, which are usually different formats (e. g. .mp4 and .flv), one or
other [or both )-:] of which may or may not play in whatever player(s)
you have.

Based on what you've said, it's just too complicated and not worth the
trouble. Given all the folks who are still using W98, I figured there was a
way of keeping W98 for internet use including videos. But if it takes all
these extra steps, it's not worth it.

Did you ever even try installing Flash 10 on your system? Maybe someone
else here already has, and can report back on it if you're afraid to try it
out.

Wait, I gave in too quickly. I just realized, I did get youtube to work on
my W98 on my laptop in the VMware machine.

It's a weird situation. I have two systems, my old W98 desktop, and my new
XP laptop with W98 on a VMware machine. As discussed in another thread, I
don't have sound working in my virtual W98. But somehow in the last day or
two, I installed Flash 9 (in Add/Remove it displays as Adobe Flash Player
ACtiveX), and the Youtubes are playing but with no sound.

Meanwhile, on my old W98 desktop, I have sound, but I can't get Youtubes to
play. I have installed the same Adobe flash player ACtive X in the
Add/Remove, but when I go to youtube page, it tells me I need a higher
version of Flash Player.
