W98SE computer will not restart
"André Bordeleau" wrote in message
news After a system settings change that requires a computer restart or when I select Start/Shut Down/Restart, the computer will not restart: Diskette Drive gets interrogated, but the display remains black with no further progress. I have to turn off the computer by the tower switch and press it again to get a start. Using the Ctl/Alt/Del will also do , but I get a Post Startup Error(s) message [162 Configuration change has occured Select one of the following: Continue / Exit Setup] from which I choose «Exit Setup» to get a restart. How could that problem be solved? 1. What happens if you select the other option = Continue? 2. Repost explaining the "system settings change." We do not know if you altered the BIOS (e.g. order of boot sources) or something else (e.g. hyperthreading which Win98 cannot reliablly handle.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

W98SE computer will not restart
Sounds like a frustrating issue! As MEB mentioned, the problems you are
experiencing might be caused by a weak CMOS battery. I too suspect this is the cause. A weak battery can cause symptoms ranging from clock being off by several minutes, or when you boot you'll notice the system does not retain bios settings, or bios settings get corrupted, or you're unable to access certain peripherals, a "CMOS Checksum Error" or "System Configuration Lost" message may be displayed, or the system will simply not boot! Lithium batteries (typically used for CMOS batteries) can have a life of 5 to 10 years (some has high as 15), but I've had batteries go bad in a few (3) years. And just because your system clock keeps time does NOT mean your CMOS battery is good!! Although a variety of issues can be causing your computers ailments, considering this BIOS error message and it sounding like your system is old, I'd say you should check the CMOS battery voltage (should be 3+ volts), or simply replace it. It is not good enough to ignore checking because the PC's time is not lost. It costs very little money and is not hard to replace. You can Google for information on how to do it. |

one of the following: Sounds like you *may* have an IBM machine. Besides changing the CMOS battery - suggested elsewhere - see also (for example) the reply to the following post on how to clear/reset the BIOS using the jumper #10. The url to the location is dead (so you may need your User Manual) but that to the procedure is good. Try a "162 Configuration change has occurred" search on Google for more. There's plenty out there. And I would tend to agree, the battery still needs checked, however we need the manufacturer and model to adequately apprise of what might be necessary in this particular situation [hence why I have not added the CMOS battery replacement link from my site and/or others wherein graphics are additionally used per general or specific types and/or models]. There is, as you state, the apparent indication of an older computer, as well as the potential of an IBM model [due to the specific error code]. However, depending upon circumstances, such as the described *unplugging from the wall of a running system* that this MAY have also caused the loss, as, at times, when removing the plug there may be an moment of attempted rapid cycling of off/restart wherein the computer accesses the BIOS yet shuts off again at a crucial stage corrupting the CMOS [similar the brown-out or power surge, or other like situations], raising the . So at this point, until response by the querier, IMO, we have insufficient materials available to properly proceed with proper diagnostics and help in this instance. My second post attempts to gather additional information relevant to the diagnostics of the party's system and potential issues. Hopefully the information is supplied, and this was not just a *drive-by* post or attempt to discern group or individual abilities to handle issues in the proper form. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |
