copy question
How can one copy files and folders into folder "X" without
overwriting any files and folders that are already in folder "X"? |

Change the names?
Choose "Do not overwrite" [in which case the second version of File X will be named File X (2)]? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE), AH-VSOP Are You Ready for WinXP SP2? http://support.microsoft.com/default...r=windowsxpsp2 What You Should Know About Spyware http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...ssoftware.mspx AumHa Forums http://forum.aumha.org B11_ wrote: How can one copy files and folders into folder "X" without overwriting any files and folders that are already in folder "X"? |

Access folder X and choose Edit / Select All. Choose File / Properties and
set the attribute for the selected files to Read-only. These files will now not be deleted or overwritten without at least a warning. You may need to remove the read-only property after the copy. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (DTS) "B11_" wrote in message ... If an identicle file is found in folder "X", no overwrite
will occur nor will a "(2)" file be written. In other words, If an identicle file is found in folder "X" then no copying will occur. What I'm trying to do is copy files into folder "X" that's not already in folder "X". __________________________________________________ -----Original Message----- Change the names? That's why I suggested the 'Select All' procedure. Change the attributes of
every file in the folder with one click. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "b11_" wrote in message ... But there are hundreds of files in folder "X". |

Use the DOS command XCOPY. Do XCOPY /?|MORE to see the options. -Y seems to
be the one you want. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "b11_" wrote in message ... If an identicle file is found in folder "X", no overwrite will occur nor will a "(2)" file be written. G'day B11,
(What kind of name is that?) are you a vitamin? Anyhows, I've always used either of 2 ways. If you have ACDSee (the worlds best image program) you just "select all" and then "copy" the selected files across to your new Folder. When an identical folder is met, it will ask you to either "skip" "replace" or attach a new file name (eg _2) etc it also gives the dates and times of the files inception which is an easy match locator by reading the time extension. Or, if I have thousands of files to copy, I use a dedicated file manager that was the old "X Tree Gold" .........is now Z Tree Gold, and was $13 when I bought it.
