Default Install Win 98 SE on laptop

I purchased a new hard drive IBM Travelstar 6.0 Gb to go
in my son's laptop that only has a single drive (either
1.44 or CD-ROM). I tried to install Windows 98 SE as
discussed below, but still having problems. I used
edit.com on both autoexec.bat and setdram.bat to replace
all references of A: with C:. When I rebooted (with
Cnly option), the computer then indicated:
"Invalid system disk. Replace the disk and press any key."
Any suggestions? I read another post that suggested
placing the mscdex001 driver in the autoexec.bat file. My
memory on DOS is old and I'm not sure how to write a
command to load the CD-ROM driver. Any thoughts?

You need EDIT.COM, usually found in the C:\Windows\Command
folder on any Win9x
machine....copy it to your floppy and from there to your
laptop hard drive.

I copied the Windows 98 Startup disk to C:. When it
rebooted, it tried to find the A:. I tried to EDIT the
*.bat files as indicated below, but the computer

indicated it was a Bad Command. Do I need another file
such as a
DOS file?

From a C:\ prompt:
EDIT autoexec.bat and press Enter.
EDIT config.sys and press Enter.

After installation is complete, you can rename in

Windows Explorer, or fromDOS....doesn't matter.
I usually rename to autoexec.ba_ and config.sy_

From DOS it would be:
REN c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.ba_
REN c:\config.sys config.sy_

Thanks for the help. I did in fact use FDISK and

Format
C: /S. Please refresh my memory - do you use the
command "edit" and then the filename *.bat (for

instance)
to open the edit file? When renaming Autoexec.bat and
Config.sys, do I use Windows Explorer? Also, should I
rename them Autoexecold.bat and configold.sys or

something
else?

Thanks again.

Boot to the startup floppy. Do FDISK to create your
partitioning (if necessary), FORMAT C: to format the
disk and SYS C: if you don't use the /S option with FORMAT.
Copy the whole of the contents of the floppy to the
hard disk drive. Edit the BAT file(s) on the hard drive
(EDIT)so that any references to A: are changed to C:. Shut
down, remove the floppy, insert the CD. Reboot to the hard
drive and install Windows from the CD. Rename AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS after the instal is finished (otherwise you
will be forever booting in installation mode).

My son's laptop has been acting up, so we decided to
fdisk
and format the harddrive. All went well; however,

his
Gateway Solo has an interchangeable 1.44 disk drive

and
a
CD-ROM. When I inserted the Startup disk, I chose
option
1 - start computer with CD-Rom support. The

computer
couldn't find the CD-Rom because the 1.44 disk was
running
at the time. I rebooted and tried to switch them

out,
but

it indicated several errors.
How can I install Windows 98 (on a CD) on a laptop
with only 1 drive? I even tried to copy all the files off
the
startup disk to the C: and boot up from there. It
seemed
to work, but then indicated a read error on Drive A:
and
requested a Retry, Abort or Fail selection. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Go to www.bootdisk.com, download what
looks likeliest for your purposes, make the
apppropriate boot disk, then edit its
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to meet
your requirements.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I should edit the
files? In other words, my DOS is a bit rusty and I'm not
sure exactly what changes need to be made. I would assume
that I need to add a line to load the CD-ROM device driver
from C:\, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it or where?

EDIT.COM is the standard DOS utility,
with its own help file: or you could simply
edit your boot floppy in a different PC (e.g.
the one you used to download from www.bootdisk.com)

Is the W98 CD an OEM version (did it come with the laptop)? If so, chances
are it is a bootable CD and there might not be a need for a floppy start up
disk. Watch the boot screen for the key to press to enter setup (the BIOS).
Once in the BIOS, navigation instructions are listed on the screen. If
there is a boot section (BIOS are different so there may not be one and you
will have to look around), go there and make sure the CDRom drive is listed
as the first boot device. Save the settings and exit. Boot with the W98 CD
in the drive and follow the on screen prompts.
