If you opt to hide the alternate install of ME using BING, then the install
in use is ALWAYS the C: drive (and you have to hide the initial install before you can run the second, since ME has to be run from the C: drive) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "deodiaus" wrote in message om... I tried changing the boot.ini to reference d: as well as autoexec.bat to refer to the newly mapped driver letter. |

How do you force a drive to be the C: drive. I guess that is set by
the OS, the first primary partition (which is not hidden). Can this be set/changed using the boot loader? Is it possible to buy a cable select switch which can be used to set the master and slave? I think someone told me about such a beast, but I wonder if he was right, or just guessing. "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Whatever partition manager you use, Win ME MUST get the impression that it's booting from drive C: - that means that you have to hide any partition that may take precedence in the order. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) |

AFAIK, there's no way to do what you seem to want to do - have two Win 9x
OS's bootable and mutually visible. only the ME OS on the .partition on the first enumerated HD can see any other OS, since Win9x OS's have to boot from the first partition they see It may be possible to get a switch to switch the IDE cables around - but I think that it's the type of thing that's going to break very easily, and induce all sorts of problems in data transfer. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "deodiaus" wrote in message om... I think the defaulted c: is correct.
One problem might be the automatic assignment of drive letters. I have 2 HDs, as my entitled "fdisk /mbr" post says. HD0 has 2 partitions partition0 (is C:\ is if the only HD) is fat d:\ (if HD1 is not installed) is fat with the windows (me) dir HD1 has 1 FAT32 partition with WinME Now, if both HDs are attached, with HD0 the master, HD1 the slave, HD0/partition0 becomes c: HD1/partition0 becomes d: HD0/partition1 becomes e: I replaced \d:\e:\ autoexec.bat to point to e:\windodws (instead of the original settings). Is there anything else which can be done? BTW, if I change HD1 to be master and HD0 to be the slave, it all works, as well as it all works if each HD is the only one in the machine! Does anyone know where I can buy a switch which lets me change this layout. This is pretty simple and should be available if I know where to buy it? The MarketPro computer fairs in NYC have lots of hackers who make such toys, but I live elsewhere. |
