Even with all the checking you did, that does no rule out the motherboard or
power supply as the root of the problem (not sure if PSU has been mentioned,
though IIRC, it wouldn't seem to be involved.)

Personally, I would hesitate to go to the expense of a new (non-returnable)
CPU when it's very possibly not the problem. If the motherboard itself is at
fault, it may well render the new CPU inoperable as soon as you power up.
Likewise, if you purchase a new mobo/CPU combo and the power supply is
faulty, you may fry the new combo as soon as you poser up.

Honestly, in this kind of situation, I don't settle for less than replacing
all three. The risk is too great that you will be throwing good money after
bad. Of course, at this point, a cost comparison needs to be done --
Mobo/CPU/PSU combo price compared against an entirely new machine. All
depends on the quality of the case and other components, and whether now is
not perhaps the time to upgrade entirely, using spare parts from the old
system to add functionality to a new barebones system.

Very belated post, but thought I'd post anyway.
The capacitators have been checked, no swelling.
As you know, fan is replaced.
Found L2 Cache 'disabled' in bios, so enabled it...... still
getting intermittent bsod's.

I believe at this stage, it is still a matter of a new cpu, if one can
be found to suit her mobo.
Yes, I agree with your comments following "I feel your pain", but I guess
we end up this way after 'fiddling'....... it must be like 'cops and
robbers',
its all about the satisfaction we get 'if' we manage to track down a
problem,
and the glee we feel Knowing we got to the root.
Thanks.

As I said, my best guess is that either something was already damaged by

the
heat, or you messed something up while you were in there. I'd go back

in,
make sure all cards and RAM, even the CPU, were seated properly, clean

the
contacts, etc., review all cable connections, etc. Test when it cranks

up
that the fan(s) all turn. If still no luck, then it would be time to

start
t-shooting by stripping the machine to bare minimums (one stick f RAM,

only
the video card (if present), only the main HDD if any others are

present --
just the bare minimums to get yourself into Windows.

I feel your pain. I decided to clean my main machine the middle of last

year
and managed to break *something* (probably the bent CPU pin, g), and

I've
been limping along on scavenged machines from my junk pile ever since --
until last week, when I replaced most of its guts with new mobo, RAM,

etc.
A
Christmas present to myself. Installation hit a snag, though, and I

haven't
had time to work through it. No biggy, just trying to get IDE drives and
SATA drives to play well together. Seems to be a regular problem with

newer
boards.

Thanks for the sites, will head over to them asap.
The computer in question is now off until the problem
is isolated.

Been spending time chasing down bsod's and appropiate hex error
msgs. Have used KB but with no luck relating to 4 of the msgs. I
also
know of 3 other 'good' sites, but still cant find ones I need.
Anyone know of a 'good' site with 'Fatal Execeptions' as only and
primary concern; need to pinpoint a problem.
(have googled)

This site looks useful.
