Default driver for the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse?

Does anyone know where to find a driver for the Microsoft Basic Optical
Mouse? The Microsoft website does not seem to have one for it and just says
it is not compatible with the intellipoint drivers it has on the website.
My Windows 98SE installation does not seem to have a driver for it and using
the standard PS/2 port mouse driver causes the optical mouse to malfunction.
I cannot believe Microsoft does not have an adequate Windows 98 driver for
its own basic optical mouse!

Please help.

How old is the mouse? MS stopped supporting Windows 98SE a couple of years
ago, so they are not really interested on getting drivers to work on Windows
98SE.

Go into Safe Mode, remove the mouse(s) found there, restart and let Windows
reinstall. If it still doesn't work, give up on the Optical mouse.

Trying to pin the "cause" or "fault" or "blame" on any particular component,
hardware or software, is futile. It's a total gestalt thing--it works or it
doesn't (though resetting ESCD in BIOS might prove useful--tells BIOS to
reassign hardware resources.)

The mouse is brand new and on the box it says it is compatible from W98 to
XP!

If one goes to the Microsoft website the mouse section still shows the
"Basic Optical Mouse" as available for sale today (!) and it is said to be
compatible from W98 on but no mention of a driver is available other than
saying it is not compatible with intellimouse - the only driver they have
available for download. I have seen a no-name optical mouse that works fine
on a Windows 95 PC! This one - that is not compatible - is a Microsoft
product.

Default driver for the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse?

Jeff - go to Logitech's website and download their software for their
optical wheel mouse. I also have the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse and
found that Microsoft does not support it. I tried using it with Win98
1st edition and had no wheel function. Since I have a Logitech optical
wheel mouse and the CD that came with it, I installed MouseWare 9.76
for the Basic Optical Mouse and it works like a charm. Win98 sees it
as a Logitech Compatible Mouse PS/2 (I'm using the PS/2 port). I now
have a control panel with full mouse options, and the wheel scrolls
properly. Hope this helps. -jp
