Black screen upon start up with ME

Black screen upon start up with ME

I downloaded some Microsoft updates and Direct X, and a Nero demo version
over two days. When trying to install the latest of the nero, it asked me
to restart my computer. When it came back up, there was only a black screen
with blinking cursor.

CURRENTLY: If I do shut down or restart, I get a black screen with blinking
cursor and can not shut down (even with cont alt delete). If I press/hold
power off button and come back up it goes into safe mode. While coming up:
Extended RAM passed takes a long time to process.

Last week I ran the scanreg /fix command from a command prompt
Still comes up in safe mode.
I tried to do a system restore from several points and it didn't affect
this.

I have a Pentium III 381. MB RAM using Windows ME

Can you please help me figure out what I can do to fix this computer?

Try booting to Safe Mode, and Uninstalling Nero - then run SCANREG /FIX
from a command prompt.
