How to terminate a driver?
Download Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html and see if it shows TRUCRYPT as a running process when the program itself is not loaded. If it does, use Process Explorer to kill it. I suggest you contact the author of the program about the problem. This does not appear to be a Win98 shutdown problem, but rather an issue with the TRUCRYPT driver resisting being closed at shutdown. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Peabody" wrote in message news:LDBUe.119177$Ep.68997@lakeread02... I just wanted to add that System Information shows a Kernal Driver named TRUCRYPT, which it says is type 4.1, but "loaded by" is "unknown". So I guess I need to find a way to terminate this kernal driver. "Peabody" wrote in message news:WkAUe.119170$Ep.5875@lakeread02... I've been using TrueCrypt 1.0 on my Win98SE system, and it works fine, except that if I run TrueCrypt, my system hangs on both Shutdown and Restart in DOS mode. But it will Restart. I believe this problem is caused by TrueCrypt leaving its driver installed and running even after the program has been terminated. The docs confirm that it does that. TrueCrypt is an on-the-fly encryption program that mounts encrypted container files as new partitions, and I assume that is the source of the problem. But it occurs even if no container has been mounted at all - just running TrueCrypt will cause it. So, I wonder if there is a way to manually terminate such a driver, assuming I could find out what it is, so that I could then shut down properly. Is there a utility that will do that? Any other suggestions? It appears that 98 shutdown problems, like the poor, will always be with us. |

In that case, Process Explorer *probably* won't help, as it does not show those VxD
files that load with Windows. However, since the problem is only occurring if the Trucrypt app has been run in that Windows session (if I am reading you right), then perhaps Process Explorer will show something that is starting with Trucrypt, and then not closing when you close the app. Let's see what it shows. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Peabody" wrote in message news:Y9EUe.1832$GK2.1297@lakeread07... glee says... When TrueCrypt is installed, the file truecrypt.vxd is placed in the Windows/System/IOSUBSYS folder. It appears that everything in that folder is loaded by Windows when it boots up - because System Information shows TRUCRYPT as a kernal driver so long as that vxd is in that folder. But it is only when truecrypt.exe is run later, apparently activating the driver in some way, that the shutdown problem arises. This is definitely a TC problem, but this version is no longer supported by the authors, nor is TC supported at all now for 98SE. But this version still works, except for this problem, and in the freeware realm, this is the only encryption software that produces containers compatible on both 98 and XP versions. So I need to make it work on my own if I can, and that would have to be by way of some general purpose utility. I will try Process Explorer. Thanks again. |

When I run TrueCrypt, a single line for that appears in the upper window of PE. The lower window shows various DLLs that it appears to have used. When I shut down TrueCrypt, the line in the upper window goes away. I don't know how you would tell if it left one of the DLLs open. Well, this was good shot, but no cigar, I guess. Still looking for a way to unload a device driver. I think that's what it's gonna take, unless I can find the source code. It is open source, but the source for this version is no longer on the sourceforge site. Anyway, thanks for your help. What about trying tlist.exe and/or kill.exe from the Windows 98 Resource Kit? ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Services/Tec...nose/TLIST.EXE ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Services/Tec...gnose/KILL.EXE -- Franc Zabkar Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |
