Default Missing System Tools folder

I just used Scanreg/restore, the oldest registry is only a few days

The machine runs fine, so I want to fix this without reformat, etc.

How to restore the System Tools folder?

ms

Thanks to all. I recreate the folder and have shortcuts to my usual
scandisk, defrag, and now system file checker.

I may be having the result MEB referred to. The "original" version I
have scans, completes, I see no action.

I really doubt that in this machine, all files are OK. I used it for
trial installs, so the registry is, IMO, got some issues. One obvious
symptom, an install had removed some VB6 files. I reinstalled VB6 but
my favorite cleaner utility, CCleaner, only runs in a very old
version, so some files in windows are missing. And of course, the
default windows had a System Tools folder.

If MEB can point me to the updated SFC, I will try to clean up the
machine that way. If not, reformat.

That's right, make your own shortcut, or run it from MSInfo32, Tools
menu, or this way...

"START button, Run, SFC"

However, this tool needs a priming, which basically means to accept all
current changes. The "Settings", especially "Search Criteria", may need
adjusting. You may look through the log, C:\Windows\SFCLOG.TXT, to see
what it's done. Also, there is a certain amount of confusion involved
with it, under the best of circumstances. For one thing, certain files
will always seem to have changed. For another, it does not well handle
version numbers greater than 11 characters.

Thanks, PCR. I will digest the above data.

This is the machine you helped me with before, shadowing video. It has
no sound driver (MEB- that file was defective, mfgr is out of
business, so I gave up), but is otherwise OK. I want to partition the
12 GB hard drive so will look into that. IIRC, 3-4 MB for W98SE OS is
all it needs. So I will have about 8 GB for utilities.

Even with memory problems in my old age, I can still remember
surprises when you format a nice running OS. But I want that
partition. In W2K/XP there is a nice freeware utility (Partition
Wizard) that says it can create a partition in an operating OS, but I
never heard of that in W98.

Oh, I have the files for the Aureal, FROM Aureal. Perhaps someone will
offer a download/ftp area I can put them in or they can, for not only
you but others, WITHOUT all the garbage most download sites now have on

The OS has nothing to do with the ability to create partitions; all you need
is sufficient free space for the desired partition size and a program to
make the partition(s). Of course, one has to decide whether to make another
primary partition or an extended one for logical drives.

OK. I think SFC is useful to run now/then to see what files have
changed.

This is the machine you helped me with before, shadowing video. It has

All right. I hardly remember it. So, I suggest you hold MEB's feet to
the fire for an explanation!

Did I ever recommend to you & did you ever download...

http://www.bootitng.com/ 's BootIt NG, has a variety of backup
capabilities & works with all OS: Copy partition(s) to HDD, or Image to
HDD or to CD or DVD. Create, move, shrink or expand partitions without
data loss. Multi-boot too. To install & use beyond 30 days, $34.95.

However, take a quick look in the BootIt NG docs for an explanation of
"CHS Alternative" &...
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=072
You should select the alternative, if you ever intend to use PowerQuest.

........Start.........
CHS Alternative: If this option is enabled then the CHS values for
partitions and volumes will be filled in using an alternative method.
........End..........

I only run BootIt NG from the floppy. It has never failed me in what I
do with it. I've never multi-booted. I'm running on a partition that has
been to HD1 & back and shrunk without data loss. Here is how to run it
from floppy...

(1) Download it: BootItNG.zip.
(2) Unzip it; read the .pdf.
(3) Click BOOTITNG.EXE to create a floppy.
(4) Boot the floppy, which puts up an "Install" requester.
(Not sure it will work write-protected, but try.)
(5) Click to cancel the install.
(6) You are now in Maintenance Mode, running off the floppy.
(7) Click the Settings icon to check out the "Alternative CHS" setting.
(8) Click the "Work with Partitions" icon to examine them.

BEST read that manual before doing much at steps (7) & (8)! Work up a
detailed plan & post it to the group.

3. SFC compares files with a database created at
OS installation. Win98 SFC does not update its source
database (as later implementations may do) thus is
likely to mislead the unsophisticated user.

I thought pressing the "accept" (or whatever it's called) button does
update the database. Or am I misunderstanding what you're getting at?
