Yep. That's the one I continue to use. It's main peccadillo is that it
is tough to use Explorer or the Toolbar until the update of virus
definitions is completed. But everything is fine after that! That
v.4.8.1368 is fairly recent -- so I question whether they really will
ever abandon us lowly Win98 users after all!

was no longer possible to get definition updates. The look
didn't matter, the functionality certainly did. R.I.P.
F-Prot for DOS.

I was using F-Prot until it died, for the same reason... Ah,
those were the days... But ESET /IS/ better... I hated the
"unable to open archive (unknown compression method?)" message
in F-Prot...

If you're willing to shell out a bit for the BEST, ESET NOD32
has a 98 version (you have to look at a few of their
international sites to find it). It uses the same sig files as
the latest XP/V/7 version, updated daily. Buy it (can be gotten
for less at www.purplus.com, gotta do a search though), get key,
DL. Same key works for all versions (they still have a DOS
version, too, but not updating the sigs anymore).

The 98 interface is what /all/ interfaces should be. The XP/V/7
is "modern" in the bad sense of the word - but it /could be/ a
LOT worse... And it IS the best AV program.

Get the AV-only-version. Lots of free firewalls around.

Thanks for the suggestion about Opera 10.10. I downloaded it but I
got a message saying that msimg32.dll is either old or missing and
that I should download it. One web site said that it is not
recommended to download it from a web site but I do not have the
backup cd. What shall I do?

Guy,
Thank you for the reply. Sorry about the multi-posting. I really
like my 98 machine better than my xp machine. My only complaint is
that my 98 machine is only a 433mz and is very slow in playing youtube
videos. Do you know of any way to improve that? Also, I am using
IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that they will not work on
IE6 shortly. Any advice on that? Thanks again for your help.

There are no "drive-by" vulnerabilities that affects Windows 98. Never
has been.

And most of the malware that tricks users to perform the installation
doesn't run on Windows 98.

So right off the bat, the need for AntiVirus software for Windows 98 is
basically zero, and has been for at least the past 3 or 4 years.

Norton Anti-Virus 2002 is probably the best and least resource-intensive
AV program for win-98, and it can still be updated by downloading the
Symantec Intellgent Updater package. This brings NAV 2002 completely
up-to-date with the most recent virus definitiona and scan engine. If
you can't find NAV-2002 on a torrent and you really want it - let me
know. I can put it on a torrent or a download site.

If you are seeking an antivirus package to perform on-demand scanning of
suspicous files (that you might acquire from the net) then I suggest
that instead of seeking an AV app, that you submit suspicious files to
virustotal.com where they will be scanned by 40 different AV programs.

My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly.

Because Windows 98 runs all apps in i86 Ring-0, has no cumbersome
privledge or security accounts model, and runs on the faster FAT32 file
system, it's a natural result that it's a faster operating system
compared to the bloated NT-based OS's.

Thought I had lost it couple of days ago, fired up the Win98 PC and
"Update Avast" only to be refused as the registration had expired.
Renewed the "Free Reg." for another year with no problems :-)

Very good. I see my updates expiration is set for 1/1/2011 -- the date
some say it all ends us!

Thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded Opera and upon opening I
got the warning "the system library msimg32.dll is old or missing."
Any thoughts about this?
