Installing/Uninstalling in Safe Mode
I have rarely have used Safe Mode, but I wonder if Safe Mode is suitable for
installing and uninstalling programs that tend to crash or freeze up the system (using Win 98, IE 5.5) when installing or uninstalling them? I'm thinking mainly of AntiVirus and web accelerator programs, several of which I have had problems with when installing and uninstalling. Somewhere I read that in Safe Mode, full registry access isn't available, though I wonder what that means. So I wonder if uninstalls in Safe Mode might work OK, but installs might not. Has anyone any experience with Safe Mode for installs/uninstalls? |

Installing/Uninstalling in Safe Mode
web accellerator:: may not be really useful, you can get most of the benefits
without the overheads of installed devices, and for already compressed files it may be actually slower than without them installed, the advertising states 'UP TO 5 times faster' which clearly includes zero. they are usually a proxy server to speed up recently accessed links, a hosts system to remove junk from web pages and on-the-fly compression to reduce data transmission, Most ISP have a link to the ISP's proxy server posted on their web site, with instructions for setting it up, Hosts files to strip out advertising are already freely available together with programs to maintain them(take 50k of advertising images from a 100k web page and it loads twice as fast), a good one from msmvp.org is regularly updated, the compression routine to decrease data transmission is of no use on already compressed files, zip+rar+exe installers, mp3 avi mpg mov media files are already compressed, and the processor overheads may add to the size of compressed files (try rezipping a zip file, the result is bigger than the initial zip) and then there is the processor overhead on the local pc to decompress the datastream. Often a good local Hosts file and use of your own ISP proxy server means no need for the web accelerator -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "Karl T. Installing/Uninstalling in Safe Mode
Windows programs won't install or run in Safe mode, but
they can often be uninstalled in Safe mode, because that is what it is there for: for system diagnostics and to undo faulty changes to the system. If you can't install a Windows program in normal Windows mode, it's advisable not to use it. Find alternative that can installed properly. Installing/Uninstalling in Safe Mode
Eric,
Thanks for the observation. So, if I uninstall a difficult program in Safe Mode, I assume it will update the registry and do the usual cleanup an uninstall does? I believe I'm having to do this with an old accelerator program, Netsonic Pro 2.0, which I understand may have problems uninstalling in regular Windows mode since two of its files are always in use (I can see this when I do tape backups, which report an "error" in that they are always unable to backup these files since they are in use.) -- Karl Eric wrote in message ...
