What can I upgrade to?
I have windows 98 on a hewlett packard pavillion 6710, 15 Gb hard drive,
which operating systems can I upgrade to? The memory is 64Mb SDRAM(Max 512 MB) - 11MB shared video. What I would like to do is upgrade the computer so that I can use mobile broadband. I would be grateful if anyone could help. Thank you. |

If you increase the computer's memory to at least 256 MB (512 MB is much better), you can upgrade to Windows XP. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

It was handicapped by being installed in PC's with crappy hardware specs. Yea, win-98 will run like a dog with 64 mb ram. So the standard response - install XP on it. And oh, by the way, increase the ram while your at it. Well guess what - increase the ram and see how win-98 runs. You won't be able to "buy" a "legit" copy of XP (with a corresponding license) any more. If you buy one on e-bay, you have no garantee that the product key is still legit and will be accepted by Microsoft during installation (Genuine Activation). |

In my experience, Windows 98 runs fine with 64 MB or even 32 MB. XP will "run like a dog" with less than 256 MB, and it's pretty slow with 256 MB. Fully "legit" Windows XP upgrades are available from Newegg, Amazon, Buy.com, Office Depot, etc. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |
