Default ScanDisk Stops Half Way

Problem: When I run ScanDisk, the progress bar will get half way and stop.

Comments: I do not get the "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times..." message; all
prgrams are closed. This is the first time this has happened. Also, when I
tried running Disk Defragmenter, it says "...cannot defragment drive because
there are errors on the disk..". So I know there are errors, and I have
selected "Thorough Scan" and "Automatically Fix Errors". I have also tried
running ScanDisk in Safe Mode, but it does the same thing. The screen does
not freeze because I can still move my mouse cursor, however, if I hit Ctrl +
Alt + Delete, I get a blue screen warning message: "System is unstable or
busy...".

ScanDisk may be just taking a really long time fixing the errors on the disk
because I can still see the HD light on the PC flashing periodically, but I
have waited an hour when the progress bar got half way, and it still is
frozen at half way. ScanDisk usually only takes about 30 minutes to complete
on my PC.

Any help is helpful.

Have you tried the DOS version of scandisk from a floppy e.g. windows
startup disk?
