Default Some dialogs in French

This problem only happens when I log into various sites that use an HTTPS
page for the user name and password entry. After I click on the 'LogIn'
or 'Submit' button I get a "Security Warning" dialog about returning to
the non (insecure) HTTP page. All normal, I presume.

However, starting a couple of months ago, these particular dialog boxes
are in French. I have checked my "Regional settings" in control panel and
they are correctly set to my country and language English.

I recently upgraded Win98 to WinMe and sorta hoped that this would cure
the language problem, but no change. Using IE 5.5

Any suggestions on how to make these dialogs display in English ?

Thanks, Doc.

Upgrading a flakey OS is a recipe for disaster - it will almost always
result in greater problems that you started with.

Having said that, try installing the Critical patches for ME - including
IE6SP1. Then reboot to Safe Mode, and run the Repair of IE from Add/Remove
Programs.

The language problem is the only problem on this PC, and was there before
the upgrade to ME. Somewhere there must be a language control I can
reset. The problem dialogs ONLY occur when returning to an HTTP page from
an HTTPS page. I suppose I could lessen the security of my PC and turn
off security warnings, but surely if the dialogs used to be in English
but are now in French, surely there is a setting somewhere that controls
this.

I just went to control panel/regional settings and changed my language
setting to French. Rebooted. Verified French was the default language -
went to OE and checked an email, date was showing in French.

Went back to regional settings, changed back to English and rebooted.
Verified English was default language, OE email dates in English. Went to
MSN Zone games site, signed in on their HTTPS page, hit enter and got the
security message as usual ........ but still in French.

Luckily I did 2 years of French language as a teenager (too many years
ago now) so I can get the gist of what the messages say and which button
to push (oui).

Looks like a problem I need to live with ?

I suspect that this has nothing to do with any regional settings you might
have but rather that at around the time this problem started you installed,
intentionally or otherwise a dll (dynamic link library) intended for use on a
French language PC rather than an English language PC. Since this predates
your upgrading to Win Me you cannot use system restore to roll back your
system to before that time. As to which library this might be, I'm sorry but
I don't know but could perhaps be found by searching your PC for one
containing the French text you are seeing.

Thanks Mike, sounds like its worth a try. I guess if I exclude any dll's
with the WinMe issue date it will cut down the task at hand. And I guess
if I use SysInternals Process Viewer then I will narrow the field down
even more. Sounds like a job for a wet weekend.

Doc,

Sounds as if you know what might need doing. I just wish I understood why the
file involved wasn't updated when you upgraded to Win Me. Just a thought,
what version of Internet Explorer were you running on 98SE before you upgraded
to Win Me? I ask because my gut feeling is that the file involved could form
part of IE and that if you were using a version of IE later than that included
with Win Me it is possible, just, that it didn't get replaced when you
installed Win Me. Note I'm grasping at straws here. What happens if you
perform a repair of Internet Explorer? [Add/Remove Programs, select IE and
then choose to repair when the popup box opens] Does this throw up an error?

IE 5.5 SP 1 before and after

Thanks for the suggestion, I wondered where the repair option was hidden.
Just did the repair ... followed by a reboot. No message during repair,
and French problem still there

The weekend is coming so I will have some time to check thru the .dll's
involved.

Thanks for your interest Mike.

Doc,

Well IE 5.5 SP1 is a version later than that included in Win Me
(v5.50.4314.0100) which could mean that Win Me may not necessarily have
correctly installed all the browser components (IE5.5 SP1 is v5.50.4522.1800)
but I don't think that doing this would cause the significant problems that
can occur when a user reinstalls Win Me over itself where IE had previously
been upgraded to IE6.

Incidentally if you are running IE5.5 SP1 may I strongly suggest that you
upgrade this to at least IE5.5 SP2.

Best of luck with your hunt for the French at the weekend - text of course.

Thanks for all the help Mike. Over the weekend I took the plunge and
upgraded IE to 6 + SP1 + all the patches. Didn't know whether this old
machine would handle it too well. MS recommended a minimum of 450MHz
processor and this PC is only 300MHz. But it seems to hum along just as
quickly as it did on IE5.5 (filtering out all the advertising sure helps,
and an abundance of RAM).

And ....... the dialog boxes in question are all back in English. I guess
that was one way of effecting THE FIX.

Once again, thanks for the interest and the help.
