anti-virus for Win Me ?

For my own amusement and to play old games I have installed Win Me into VMware player. Does anyone know of a free anti-virus product that is still available for Win Me ? It is unlikely that it will be connected to the internet but best to make sure. You should have posted (or cross-posted) your question to a win-98 newsgroup. (but not win-me, because those groups are dead). Norton Anti-virus 2002 functions perfectly fine as an AV program for win-9x/me. Once you install it, you can download something called the "intelligent updater" file which will give NAV-2002 the most current symantec scan engine and viral definitions. I can post download links for Norton System Works 2002 (which includes NAV 2002) if you want - just ask. Once you install NAV 2002, it will accept viral definition updates for a year. After that, if you want it to accept new definition files, you'll have to re-install it (and delete the file "catalog.livesubscribe") to regain another year of free use. All that said, you really don't need to run any antivirus program on win-9x/me systems. Not today, and not for the past 7 years. Because there has been no malware in circulation (either browser-based or file-based) that runs on win-9x/me systems. All windoze malware for the past 7 years is designed only for win-NT based systems. They have no capacity to recover from errors when they execute on win-9x/me systems. |

Won't what? Update the definitions, or the scan engine? If you say "scan engine", then you should take your foot out of your mouth and read this thread: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!ms...M/fmS20JfvBGwJ Subject: McAfee or Norton on New Notebook? Date: Sun, 07 Aug 2005 14:32:23 +0100 Newsgroups: alt.comp.virus Every time I update NAV 2002 with Intelligent Updater, the various DLL's mentioned in that thread also get updated. All windoze malware for the past 7 years is designed only for win-NT based systems. They have no capacity to recover from errors when they execute on win-9x/me systems. That's insane and quite stupid advice. There is malware still circulating that will make win9x it's home.... Name one. Every file that I get via spam email (that claims to be a document, a ticket receipt, a fax, a voice mail, etc) but is instead an executable, I usually run just for the hell of it on my win-9x system - and watch it fail with some "this program performed an invalid operation" error. |
