Default problems using a start up disk

I have an IBM 600e laptop (366 mhz, 160 ram) with win 98se. I created a
startup disk using create disk in add/remove programmes. I then attempted
to boot from floppy. When a:/ came up, I typed in win but instead of going
into windows I got "CDR101: Not ready reading drive F".

I assume this means that the floppy does not have the correct CD driver on
it. However I checked the CD driver via system/device manager and it seems
to a be a basic Microsoft driver with a date 4-23-1999. The CD drive is a
DVD/CDRW Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2212. I tried to locate driver via
c:/config.sys and c:/autoexec.bat but can find no reference to the drive.

Why is DOS referring to drive F where in My computer
the drive is listed as E?

I am not even sure if "win" is the correct command? I ask this because a
friend tried to use startup disk, typed in win and got "bad command or file
name".

Hope you can help

Matthew

Default problems using a start up disk

When using the Windows 98 Start-Up Disk, watch the display. The boot
(startup) disk is not large enough to hold all the tool files it needs, so
it makes a "RAM Drive" and extracts the required files, from a compressed
file, into this RAM drive. Since the RAM drive is not a removable drive it
get the first drive letter above the hard drive(s). In your case it is
assigned drive D. Then the CD drive get the next letter, in your case it is
assigned drive F. All this information is shown on the screen as the disk
sets up the computer.

Win.com is not a valid command when booting from the Startup disk.
The startup disk is used to repair, not run, windows.

Next time you use this disk, do a directory search on A and on D and you
will find most of the DOS tools there.
You do know how to use DOS don't you?
If not, stay away from the startup disk.

Default problems using a start up disk

Thanks for this
No I don't know how to use DOS but I imagine knowing how to use startup disk
is pretty useful when it comes to computers not working...
The situation came about because a friend's computer was not booting up and
I advised him to try with Startup disk. I then thought i would try on my
own computer. I was definitely under the impression that it was possible to
boot into windows from floppy - are you saying that this is not the case?
Or that to do this one has to search directory of A, C and D (in my case) to
find requisite drivers?
You write "win.com" is not a valid command - is this the same as "win"?
I have hard drive partioned into C and D so I assume that is why RAM drive
has taken E and CD drive is allocated F....

many thanks for further help

matthew
