Default Pc keeps detecting devices already installed

I have Win 98 se and every time I restart my pc Windows detects new hardware.
Usually it is the monitor, I just click cancel, but I had to remove several
instances of the monitor under device manager. Also, on start up, the initial
black screen in DOS which lists installed devices, I have two exact listings
of my cd-rom device. How do I correct this? I have a Packard Bell Legend
Supreme 1985 pc w/ 333 AMD K6-2 processor that has 3DNow! technology and I
recieve error messages that no 3d devices are detected when trying to run
some screensavers. Any advice for any of the above problems will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

I suggest that you boot in safe mode and where there are duplicate devices
in device manager, delete ALL the devices. Then reboot and let Windows
redetect the devices.
