Changing the speakers should not affect your system. If you are getting
sound in screen saver that means the sound card is functioning fine and
also the device drivers are working.

What type of sound is not coming? Please be specific with what exactly you
are trying to accomplish.

For playing music CD the system doesn't use software. The data is directly
fed from CD player to the sound card and it would work without any drivers.
I think you must have decreased the volume of your sound card.

Check if you have a speaker symbol at the right bottom corner of your
computer. If you find it double click on it and check if mute option is
selected for master volume, wave, sw sync etc except for mic. If yes, then
remove it.

Also increase the volume if you find it to be low.
