Microsoft Works 6, Word Processor Text, No Space Between Letters
Hi,
I replaced the HD in my sister-in-laws Win98 computer. Installed Win98, then her aps, which includes "Microsoft Works 6" (year 2000). To our surprise, using the Word Processor, the letters are against each other (no space between each letter)!!! It doesn't matter what font or letter size you select. I have not been able to figure out how to correct this issue. I have looked into the "Format", etc. settings. Does anyone know what is causing this issue? Thank You in advance, John |

Thank You in advance, John Quick Google search for "ms works 6 fonts squashed". One website suggests reinstalling the printer driver used by Works. Another says select some of your "squashed" text, right-click and pick "font" (or use the dropdown menus from above), see if there's a "character spacing" setting available, and see if it's set to "condensed". |

Hi Sanity Clause, Correction: Thank you for the information you found (not your suggestion). I remembered that I did perform the second part of your reply, "...right-click...", but everything I tried did not provide a "character spacing" option. Also, "Help" didn't have any information regarding "character spacing". I don't have much faith in the printer driver as the cause because using "Word Pad" in my sister-in-law's PC as a test, the text was normal with normal spacing. Does anyone else know the cause of this issue? Thank You in advance, John |

Microsoft Works 6, Word Processor Text, No Space Between Letters
I replaced the HD in my sister-in-laws Win98 computer. Installed
Win98, then her aps, which includes "Microsoft Works 6" (year 2000). To our surprise, using the Word Processor, the letters are against each other (no space between each letter)!!! It doesn't matter what font or letter size you select. I have not been able to figure out how to correct this issue. I have looked into the "Format", etc. settings. Are you seeing "squashed" characters (with no spacing between them) on the computer screen, or on the pages that get printed by the printer? In MS Word 2000, here are the instructions for changing the spacing between characters: ================== Change the spacing between characters: Select the text you want to change. On the Format menu, click Font, and then click the Character Spacing tab. Do one of the following: 1) To expand or condense space evenly between all the selected characters, click Expanded or Condensed in the Spacing box, and then specify how much space you want in the By box. 2) To kern characters that are above a particular point size, select the Kerning for fonts check box, and then enter the point size in the Points and above box. Note: Selecting Expanded or Condensed alters the spacing between all selected letters by the same amount. Kerning alters the spacing between particular pairs of letters. ================== Offhand I don't know how similar (or different) MS Word 2000 is to MS Works 6. Assuming this issue with character spacing pertains to printed output - If you print a text file from notepad and then from wordpad - are the characters printed normally? Hi 98 Guy, I should have indicated that this (squashed characters and no spacing) is on the screen. I did exactly what you suggested, but there was no option for character spacing anywhere!!! I spent a lot of time looking at all the text adjustment functions for a character spacing adjustment. UPDATE/SOLUTION: Since my sister-in-law is only interested in the word processor, I recently downloaded "abiword-setup-2.4.6.exe", FREE word processor for Win98, etc. with MS Word like appearance and features. I tried it on one of my Win98 computers and I am impressed! I will remove MS Works 6 on my sister-in-law's PC and install Abiword. The download location: http://3758.133.fileflash.com/download/. Here you download the full "package" not an "installer". I HATE using those installers. Thanks again for your reply(s), John |
