Already did that about 2 years ago.

You need to update it. What you've got is really old.

b) use Firefox 2.0.0.20 (or higher if you want) as your browser

This is version 3.6.15

c) install a new(er) version of flash

I have shockwave flash 10.1.102.64

(As far as I knowm this is the last version to work on Win98,
correct me if I'm wrong).

Youtube (or other sites that use flash) might complain if they don't see
you using version 11.

I would install version 11 if I were you.

I can tell you that version 11.1.102.62 will install on win-98 if you
have the latest version of kernelex - I don't know if it will work with
your 2-year-old version.

This 11.1.102.62 version is a few months old, but newer versions don't
seem to install so we might be stuck with this version for a while.

d) install the user-agent-switcher add-on for firefox

I'll check into that one.....

Just remember that you need to change a few registry keys before you
install version 11 of flash so that it thinks you have win-2k instead of
win-98.

If this key does not exist, then create it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In that key, create a new string value and call it "CurrentVersion".
For it's value, make it either "5.1" or "5.2"

Next, navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

Change the value for Version from "Windows 98" to "Windows NT"
Change VersionNumber from "4.10.2222" to either "5.1" or "5.2"

Remember - change the VALUE of those strings - don't change their NAMES
by renaming them. To change their value, right-click on them and select
MODIFY.

Version 5.1 is associated with windows 2000, and 5.2 is associated with
several different versions of 64-bit XP, Windows Home Server and Server
2003. To be on the safe side, I would use 5.1.

You can download old versions of flash from Adobe, but you might have to
download the developer package (can be over 100 mb) just to get the
flash player installer.

Do they know what they are doing?

That may be useful info, but this is a Windows 98 group and Windows 98
is limited to IE 6 (I think). I dont use IE at all, so I dont much care
what versions of IE will work. My question is in regards to using Win98
and browsers that will run on it. Not to mention my feelings in general
about youtube stupidity. Like I said, my browsers do work, but first I
have to deal with all their annoyance nag screens, and my question is
how to kill these nag screens if it's possible.

Not in this case.

You won't solve the "outdated browser" nag screen by having a special
entry in your hosts file.

Youtube is ****ing me off. It keeps whining and complaining that my
browsers are outdated, such as Seamonkey and Kmeleon. (Using win98se).
So I use Firefox 3.x and now it's whining that my plugins need to be
updated. On EVERY DAMN PAGE I OPEN. I do not get this warning on any
other website. Quite honestly, it's none of their goddamn business what
plugins I use, nor do I give a **** if they need updating. I use what
works, and have no intention to update anything just because they insist
that I do.

Well then, it seems you've made your choice.
If it were me, I'd stop fighting it and just go ahead and update them - what
do you have to lose by updating those plug-ins? Except this pointless
battle.
If you were talking about updating the OS, or some real applications, that
could be another story. But plug-ins, who cares?

If it could tell me which plugin, then I might be able to do it.
Otherwise I will have to manually search each and every one to figure
out which one it is, or disable all of them and enable one at a time.
All of this is time consuming and for what????? All the plugins work,
so it's only to satisfy youtube, which in my opinion is a pain in the
ass anyhow, but there are time I still have to use it. I guess my other
option is to install two copies of Firefox and have one without plugins
just to use on youtube. Ideally, I just want to kill their damn nag
screens and do nothing more.

I did the update on FF on the other computer with WinXP, which is my main
computer, so I can't tell you which version is compatible with Win98.
