Why does Wikipedia keep begging for foreign fonts? (Now browser thoughts.) [Now reminiscences.]

The closest to a game for the sake of the game, that I ever got into, was the Notpron riddle. I got to around 27 before I got distracted and lost motivation. Not far, it goes to over 137 or so now. Maybe a lot more, I haven't seen it for at least a year. There IS one small game I took to... worth a special mention. A Flash game by an Australian water company in conjunction with an animation company. It's called Chasm. I totally recommend that. I remember the few hours immersed in that as some of the best in all my life. I'm not sure what makes it so wonderful, but it is... Maybe the fact that it gives us time to explore it on our terms, without trying to dazzle us with its world. Which is shy I can't get into all those big games, all the role-play and stuff. Can't be doing with it. |

It might be what John Gilliver has. I remember it, there's where? If anyone finds it, please sha I'd like to be able to give credit where due. The file I have - flame.com, 453 bytes - is dated about 1995 IIRR, but that's probably when I downloaded it; I have the feeling it's older than that. Unfortunately, not least because of the meaning the word "flame" has gained in newsgroups, it's impossible to search for. Sounds like a good description. The one the above code produces is sufficiently similar that I suspect it's come from the same mind. [] I have that starministry one, and one that's 524 bytes - from a tutorial 8- Programming Tips & Tricks Issue 7 Edited by Tenie Remmel -8 I'm fairly sure I've seen smaller ones. through walls and go anywhere so long as they don't get lost trying. A maze of little twisty passages, all alike? [] "Plugh" (-: - and xyzzy to you too! Showing our age ... I remember playing that on the university mainframe (Unix) around 1980. (I never actually finished it - not sure if there was a finish, though I think there was. I did feed the bird to the snake at one point, which wasn't a good idea.) free bird give emerald to troll IBM mainframe fortran? also 1980. I do also have a screensaver, called flamer.scr - again, can't remember where I got it, but obviously based on the same code, though it's 26,624 bytes, probably most of which is the necessary screensaver bits. Googling for "flamer.scr" seems to find lots of mentions of a file of that name and 26k, though most seem to be torrents about which I know little. If it gave you such pleasure ... an early hit on "game chasm" http://www.miniclip.com/games/chasm/en/ seems to be the one; there are/were other graphic games; I particularly liked the challenges in lineage II's dwarf complete; there's one timed part but it's mostly logic puzzles; no longer at the japanese website, but here's a copy http://eightfoldgames.com/game/dwarf-complete/ I play this on a Sunday (requires java) http://www.igoweb.org/~wms/rushHour/ There's another set of flash puzzle games that are a bit surreal, but I can't remember the name now - the first one you have to redirect an oncoming asteroid? to stop it hitting your planet (you're a white ghosty thing and you fly your Eastern European cola can to it at the start). -- [dash dash space newline 4line sig] Albi CNU |

Samorost? A flash game. I like those because they save easily, and are self contained. |

: (I think you'd like Colossal Cave. No role-playing.) Again, any links to Chasm? If it gave you such pleasure ... Not sure, I saved it.. I also had to pick out the URL's to various component files it had, for sounds and a timer. Colossal Cave sounds good, like they have the right idea, a world that draws people in, instead of blatting at them. Got to say I liked HalfLife, the little I played of it. So much attention to detail. But I either prefer to use the computer itself as the game (is why I like the Notpron riddle), or to play Flash games like Catapult. Mindless, harmless (but sadistic) fun. And at times, the earlier Miniputt flash games. Another keeper is 'Pearls Before Swine'. That geezer with the tallow-candle face and the weird attitude. LIke a showman from Rod Serling's fairground. |
