WinMM.dll error causes various problems
Hi!
I uninstalled some applications a bit ago using Add/Remove programs. Since then, when I try to start various applications that I didn't uninstall (examples include Adobe Acrobat and WinAmp), I get the error message: "The WINMM.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem". I tried replacing the file WinMM.dll with what should be a known good version of the file, but I'm still getting the error. I suspect that some useful file or registry entry this dll wants was deleted by one of the uninstall programs, but I don't know what or which. So, I suppose I need to know what WinMM.dll wants in order to start, and where to get it. Any ideas how I can fix this problem? Thanks, TRL |

Thanks for the help! It looks like those files are on the
computer and working, though. Any ideas what else could cause WinMM.dll to fail to start? Thanks, TRL |

Thanks, TRL The DLL's often depend on other DLL's so the list could be long. Because it's a Multimedia file maybe re-installing a Multimedia program like Winamp would do it. WinMM.dll error causes various problems
Well, I tried re-installing WinAmp, but no dice. I also
tried re-installing flash and a couple other programs, but that didn't fix the problem either. Then I tried installing the new DirectX, figuring that might have useful dll's, but it failed to install. Since the failure might be related to whatever's causing WinMM.dll to fail to open, I'll include the tail of the directX.log from the installation. Basically, it looks as though dsetup.dll failed to open for some reason (possibly related to why WinMM.dll fails to open), and that killed the setup. Does this info help? Any additional ideas for how I can fix this problem? Thanks, TRL directX.log tail: 02/19/04 12:55:17: dxdllreg: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wstdecod.dll is registered successfully. 02/19/04 12:55:23: dxdllreg: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mshtml.dll is registered successfully. 02/19/04 12:55:23: dxdllreg: DxDllReg.exe is removed from RUN key in the registry. 02/19/04 12:55:23: dxdllreg: ----- end DxDllReg ----- 06/16/04 12:16:43: DXWSetup: ***** DXWSETUP ***** 06/16/04 12:16:43: DXWSetup: WinMain() 06/16/04 12:16:43: DXWSetup: DXVersion: 4.09.00.0902.02 06/16/04 12:16:43: DXWSetup: SetupVersion: 4.09.00.0902.02 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll 06/16/04 12:16:44: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll 06/16/04 12:16:45: DXWSetup: CDSetup(): try to load dsetup.dll from current dir. 06/16/04 12:16:45: DXWSetup: CDSetup(): could not load dsetup.dll. 06/16/04 12:16:52: DXWSetup: could not load dsetup. 06/16/04 12:16:52: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll. 06/16/04 12:16:52: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll. 06/16/04 12:16:52: DXWSetup: CabCallBack(): MoveFileEx() is not available, use setupapi to delete file. 06/16/04 12:16:52: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll. 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: ***** DXWSETUP ***** 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: WinMain() 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: DXVersion: 4.09.00.0902.02 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: SetupVersion: 4.09.00.0902.02 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll 06/16/04 12:48:27: DXWSetup: Installed file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll 06/16/04 12:48:28: DXWSetup: CDSetup(): try to load dsetup.dll from current dir. 06/16/04 12:48:28: DXWSetup: CDSetup(): could not load dsetup.dll. 06/16/04 12:48:32: DXWSetup: could not load dsetup. 06/16/04 12:48:32: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll. 06/16/04 12:48:32: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll. 06/16/04 12:48:32: DXWSetup: CabCallBack(): MoveFileEx() is not available, use setupapi to delete file. 06/16/04 12:48:32: DXWSetup: Deleted file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\directx\websetup\inseng.dll. |

Look through all the tabs and look at the notes on the bottom. There is also a trouble shooter under the last tab. This may identify the problem.
