Default To change a file association?

The same stupid Windows ticked box 'Always use this file association'
caught me out yet again tonight. I had downloaded a media clip of
unknown file type. First I tried to open it with Windows Media Player,
taking care to UNTICK said stupid ticked box. But Windows Media Player
wasn't able to play the clip. So next I pointed Windows towards Quick
Time Player, but I FORGOT about that stupid Windows ticked box, and
didn't untick it. Result: I have an unwanted file association (Quick
Time Player couldn't play the clip either). I thought about repeating
the download (which originally took 35 mins using my 56k modem
connection). But, dammit, my Mozilla Download Manager and Windows just
immediately create another file on the desktop (the download point) that
is ALREADY a Quick Time file, which is useless. Download Manager
refuses to do another full download and deliver a pristine 'file of
unknown type' icon to my desktop.

How can I change the file association for this download that resides on
my desktop and is shown as a Quick Time file even though it clearly isn't?

Thanks - Ken

What is the file extension of the file in question? (File extension is the
three-character or four-character part of the file name after the dot, such as
"filename.wav") Also, right-click the file on the Desktop and click
Properties...that will show the extension and also what the "Type' name is listed
as.

You can then double-click My Computer, click the View menu Folder Options File
Types tab, and scroll the list looking for the file type with that extension. When
found, select it and click Remove. Click OK/Close.

Hi,

You can change file associations by going to:
StartSettingsFolder Options and clicking the File Types tab.
Find the file type you want to remove or edit, in this case remove,
highlight it and click the remove button. Reboot.

I personally wouldn't download an "unknown" file type, but, when you
right click the file and select properties, does it reveal anything
about the file? If nothing helpful there, visit the site you downloaded
it from and see if it mentions the file type there, or you can try to
force a file extension on it such as .mpg by simply adding it to the
file name.(Right click the file, select rename.) Before any of that, get
rid of the file association as described on the first paragraph.

Thanks guys. The problem file has an .rm extension. By downloading
Real Media Player, I was able to use it to take back the
file-association that had been falsely linked to Quick Time Player.
