Antivirus software for 98

Ha, spoke too soon. Tried to do a scans of HDD's and it comes back with: "NAV was unable to scan your computer for infections. The virus scan has failed because a critical error occurred during the scan." Seems this is not destined to work out. How "up to date" is that win-98 system? Does it have IE6? You will need to bring it up-to-date via the windowsupdate website. Using what-ever version of IE you have on that system, start IE, select Tools from the top menu bar, then select the third option (Windows Update). Download and install all recommended updates. Restart your system as necessary. Try running NAV 2002 again. If it still gives the same error, then download and install this: Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Scripting Engines (MSE) 5.6 http://www.mdgx.com/files/SCR569X.EXE There is a 5.7 version available, and you might need that if this doesn't work. Let me know what happens. |

Yes, but it is *only* used when a site doesn't play nice with FF2...20, and it is unpatched. You will need to bring it up-to-date via the windowsupdate website. Using what-ever version of IE you have on that system, start IE, select Tools from the top menu bar, then select the third option (Windows Update). Download and install all recommended updates. Let me know what happens. The system started locking up completely just after my previous post. It would run a few minutes and then freeze. It was totally unusable. I wound up uninstalling NSW and then doing a major reg. cleanout of residual references to Norton and Symantec. Yikes, the uninstaller leaves a *huge* amount behind in both the reg and elsewhere. System is now running fine again. I thinkl I'll quit while I'm behind, rather than go through that again and then having to patch more things. Thanks for your ongoing input. |

wrote: "Seems this is not destined to work out." well, what did you expect, it IS Norton, after all g The NAV2002 install actually worked fine - did a complete machine scan yesterday (with 2002 definitions of course), and it happily vetted inward and outbound email. But after executing the updater the trouble started. Seems Norton went to crud *after* 2002. |

Either you have an active viral infection that is interfering with your ability to correctly run NAV, or you have hard or soft errors on your drive (run scandisk to check) or you need to update various components of your OS and bring it up to date (at least bring it up to where it Microsoft left Windows 98, as of July 2006). Running defrag probably wouldn't hurt either. What CPU and how much RAM does this machine have anyways? |

Nah - it just takes time to wake up to the fact that there's a new system available for it to bollix g Norton went to hell in a handbasket when Symantec bought it (as did Partition Magic and an number of other apps). -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk |
