Default WIN98 Hangs Up in Attempt to Load

I had 256MB and now have 4 x 256MB.
I loaded drivers from the Intel Express Install CD for Intel Desktop
Boards D865GBF and D865GLC which came with my computer.
I think that I loaded drivers 1. Intel chipset INF Update, 2. Analog
Devices "SoundMax" Cadenze, 3. Intel PRO Net Connection 8, 4. Native
Storage Patch for Microsoft Windows XP, and 5. Intel Extreme Graphics 2
Driver which all said "In System" and now say Not Installed".

I do not know how to load any of them now as Window 98SE won't start.
I still have Window XP though. Thanks.

Windows 98 w/1024MB will work if you limit the vcache to 512MB maximum.
Enter this in the system.ini file under [vcache]

maxfilecache=512000

boot to command prompt only and type "edit system.ini" to add...

Default WIN98 Hangs Up in Attempt to Load

I have received several suggestions so far for my problems and I appreciate
them. I would like to try the suggestion to edit the system.ini file. I
have two questions about that. I have used Windows XP to look at my Win98
files and when I look at system.ini there is a comment that says "Do not
edit this file. It is only a place holder. The file used is system.tsh
Questions: 1. Is this the file that I should edit? I assume so. 2. Since
Win98 hangs up when I try to boot to the command prompt, can I either edit
this file using Windows XP or by using edit on a Win98 boot disk. Thanks,
Don.

it may not be visible in XP unless you have "show hidden files turned on"

but "edit c:\windows\system.ini" should work from a boot floppy

I edited the system.tch, adding maxfilecache=512000 as ssuggested but see
not effects when safe mode or safe mode with system prompt are tried. I
don't doubt that it would have helped before I messed up. Sorry for being
such a bother. Don

Anything other than system.ini are not the file/s to edit, the others are basically backups. .TSH = troubleshoot, .BAK = backup, etc. If you have a system.bak you could try renaming it to system.ini after renaming system.ini to systemini.bak, edit the newly renamed system.ini and reboot. If it doesn't work you can rename the 2 files to their original.

Default WIN98 Hangs Up in Attempt to Load

You are editing the wrong file. The system.tsh file is your previous system.ini
file that for some reason you have disabled using the System Configuration Utility
(msconfig), which is what re-named it to the .tsh extension. The file that is
currently being executed is the file named system.ini.....that's the one you need to
edit.

I added the [vcache] section to system.ini as suggested. Win98 completed
its startup including calling for the Intel setup CD and now seems to be
working correctly. Thanks very much for everyone's help and your patience
with my mistakes and lack of knowledge. I try not to get involved with the
operating system when I don't have to. Best regards, Don
