1. how to get rid of "suspend" 2. a GREAT utility (no, not for IE)

: If it just saves and restores desktop icons, no worries, that's one thing I did solve. So why did you ask about software for it and, more importantly, HOW did you solve it? I asked if something existed to restore icons to the systray area, not to the desktop. I can't remember the desktop tool, I just stowed it (in the kind of 'safe place' that made me forget where I put it...). But it's there somewhere if I want desktop icon positions saved and restored. What I don't have is a way to restore lost systray icons when Explorer crashes and restarts automatically. I know that individual programs sometimes have a method of dealing with it for their own icons, but I don't know of any way to do it for all of them. BTW, since you mentioned recover98 in another thread, this is what I have: http://www.krollontrack.com/resource...ree-downloads/ The professional version, except mine is from 2000 and 6MB installed, while the NEW version of 'pro' is a 50 MB **download**. It's also US$1,500 PER YEAR. Yes, you read correctly. Of course, I dl'd my version from the Usenet ages ago, for free. I only needed to use it once. Sounds like it's aimed at forensic recovery. Thing is, apart from a bytemapped Ghost image and a means to explore the data, there's not much to justify a very high cost, as most of the expensive task is user time and effort. Maybe when people need to look at the actual intensity of magnetic imprints to detect small differences in value that reveal data even after overwriting with new data, the price could be justified. Actually I don't know if that kind of forensics uses the drive's own machanics at all, but somethign like a scanning tunelling microscope. Which could put the cost up a tad. Systray crashes are another thing... Unavoidable, unless you are a magician. The 3-finger salute to MS coders is not a big deal. I do it even when nothing is wrong - it's always nice to do something complex on a freshly-booted system. Windows was NOT engineered to run for more than 10 hours at a time (if that) non-stop. I use Ctrl+Alt+Del a lot too. I never had an uptime fetish. I once proved I could run a DC hub, an FTP server, and do extensive still image work and audio encoding, on a W98 system that was up for a month, but I only did this to silence all the W2K WXP touts on a forum I spent time on because by then most of those had needed to reboot for some reason or another. About the download, I don't know what went wrong, maybe I needed to download more than four recent headers, perhaps.. Normally it always works. Well, I found several nice small ones, but I have not tried them yet. They are listed he http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filere.../tp/free-file- recovery-programs.htm Of those that look OK, Avira UnErase is no longer available or "supported", but you can get it at: http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_UnErase_d5284.html Majorgeeks is one of the few software DL sites that have not become totally unusable or simply spyware/adware scams. Yes, the more time passes, the more I like them. Tinyapps is also good still. And AnalogX. They're not all comparable, exactly, but they have high signal to noise, and amazing persistence and endurance. I don't need to try lots of recovery tools, Recover98 is all I need, I'm sure I tried Avira at one point. I've tried Lost+Found, Ontrack, many others, in the past. That new one you showed me yesterday looks great. It misses a lot that Recover98 finds, but it is extremely fast at finding something specific, and does tend to find recent deletions, so it may be that the signal to noise of its findings is better than Recover98, so it's an ideal first try, but if it failed I'd assume there was still a chance that Recover98 can find something. The main difficulty with Recover98 is interpreting results, a lot of manual trawling through 'garbage directories' and such, but I learned that if there is ANY chance of recovering a file, that tool WILL have it, somewhere in its almost un-navigable spoils. It is singularly good at looking at broken FAT chains or whatever they're called, finding orphaned bits of directory tree. In comparison, I found Lost+Found to be slow and hopeless, and Ontrack's tools to be similar. Recover98 showed that by doing the scan in Windows, not DOS, it could be thorough, but not tax my patience too high. |

: I don't think you're talking about this: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U...Maintenance_an d_Repair_Utilities/Recover98.htm Right firm, wrong program, apparently.. Look for v3.5c, but I'm not sure how the one I have relates to that, given how I got it. What was the name of that test group? I'll upload it there. If the drive is more than a couple of GB in size, it DOES take a long time, but that's because it's analysing broken and orphaned riectory records. As the pointers to those are gone, it must scan the disk completely to find what it can. It's better than it looks, I often stop the scan soon after it starts if I think it should have easily found a thing very recently deleted, and it often has already found it. Which means it's smart enough to look in obvious ways, an dleave slower, more thorough methods till later in the scan. Rest2514 likely only uses the faster methods. Which is good, it likely beats flying blind with Recover98, wondering how soon you can risk stopping it without wasting time. My copy of Recover98 has one annoying quirk, it sometimes won't save a file, and a rescan is needed to get it workign right. I don't know why that is. I always keep partitions SMALL if they are for executable code, or for important data. Rarely over 1GB. That makes a huge difference favouring easy and fast recovery. If I do see that missing DLL thing I'll explore it. So far it only shouted that if I deliberately hid it. |

Any group you want. I lost part of my "sent" dir - MAJOR computer problems, so I can't check where I sent it. Ok, name a group. If your provider doesn't carry them all, better that you pick one. I can reach Easynews so I can guarantee to reach it, but if I choose an obscure test group, it's possible you can't, so pick one, I'll use that one... I'll post that file later, when I figure out PowerPost. It's been a while, and I'm trying to sort out 100 MB of oscilloscope trace photos while I still have any willpower left. |

: thanatoid wrote in : alt.binaries.test.test Done. Post 348831... Yes, I checked my bin server before coming in here, got it. I had to guess at which post it was, since it did not occur to me to expand the long subject line to see what was at the end (I am getting older **and dumber** EVERY day), but I guessed correctly... Since I am now a prisoner of The Dyevyll known as XP, I will probably have to run it in 95 compatibility mode. That works surprisingly well - I still use a LOT of old programs, of course. They are SO much better than the new garbage... Still, while I REALLY hate to say this, overall, the Xperience is coming along VERY well. Sigh. I can't believe I just typed that, even though I included a pathetic little disclaimer... |

About the photos, not so awesome maybe, they condensed to around half a meg once I'd cropped and compressed all. That widget... if at first it do not please, give it another go sometime. I had mixed feelings about it, there are definitely nicer lookign tools, but it does work. I just wish it was easier, but I take effectiveness over convenience if I'm on the edge of losing stuff. |

: It will not run the installer under XP, even in 95 compatibility mode. But I suppose now that I am enjoying XP, there are quite a few to choose from. Sigh. Thanks very much anyway. It's not an installer. It's an EXE in a ZIP file. |
