Hard disk problems
Hi, I cannot install win98 while keep data on D drive. I checked the
partition, found strange problem: start with flopy disk (win98 startup disk), and type fdisk, the partition information showed 2 disks (actually, only one hard disk on the computer, partitioned C and D): Disk Drv Mb Free Usage 1 3095 100% C: 3095 2 8025 100% D: 4055 current fixed disk drive: 2 Partition Status Type Label Mb System Usage 1 NTFS 4001 50% D: 2 A PRI DOS 4055 FAT16 51% Current fixed disk drive 1 Partition Status Type Label Mb System Usage C: 1 A PRI DOS CDrive 4055 FAT32 100% I think this may be the result that, before this, I have to hard disks on the computer, I asigned C: for disk 1 which was used for windows 98, I devided disk 2 to 2 partitions, D: and E:, D: was used as NT4.0, E: used for data. Later, Disk 1 was broken, so, I took it down and use only disk 2. I cannot remember what I did on disk 2, I seemed I installed win98 on partition C: on disk 2, partition D: was data. Now the problem is, I cannot installed win98 on C: of disk 2, it always ask me to delete non-dos partition, as I have data on D: of disk 2, I cannot let it delete the partition, therefore, I could not get win98 installed. I tried use the rescure recover CD come with the computer, it seemed working, but the result is all recover actually done on D: of disk 2. When start, the computer still looking for C:, but there is no system on C: How can I keep data on D: of disk 2 and install win98? Thanks! |

Sorry for wrong information. There are 2 hard disks on this computer.
The problem is that disk 2 is the main disk, always start with disk 2 (data also on this disk), but it has NTFS formated before. I disconnected disk 1 and deleted NTFS partition, leave only one partition on disk 2, but I still cannot install win98 on that disk. I cannot understand why. "gz" wrote in message ... So, you now have one hard drive? How is it attached? There are four =
possibilities: Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave. You *should* make it Primary Master. Yep, Gary has the scheme for making your PC setup for a 98 installation.
Problem is, you don't seem to know what you want per NTFS partition you wanted to keep, then decided to delete it. And, like Gary hints, but I'll say it aloud. Why keep a hard drive in a PC if its broken? Pull it out completely. I would wipe all partitions, and MBR remnant, and bios extender you may have on any hard disk. Then set is up for a 98 install.
